Is this video real? how come no one else does this?

in youtube type in shaolin kung fu vs. karate. Scroll down until you find "VERY RARE FIGHT SHAOLIN KUNG FU VS. KARATE". are they masters? I don't see anyone do this in every sparring match.tnx

Is this video real? how come no one else does this?
Its not that tight.
Reply:anything is possible
Reply:wierd
Reply:Yes it was "real" but it was staged, watch the "monk" duck the round house before it even happens.
Reply:I don't see a link to the video. I'd like to see it if you could provide 1.
Reply:I believe this "fight" was more a demonstration than anything else. It's unusual to have masters of two different arts spar. The moves they were performing, both offensive and defensive, were real.

Just realise that if it had been anymore than a demonstration, it would have been a lot faster and seemed even more unrealistic.

This is my opinion based on the obeservation of the video and my own practices in martial arts.
Reply:it is fake but i study shaolin kung fu and i wouldnt doubt that that is possible

Taking another man with me to China, NOT my fiance?

Background Info: I'm 22 %26amp; studying world history in college. I'm planning on going on a short trip to China next Spring Break, something I've wanted to do for YEARS now. My close friend Daniel is a teacher at a martial arts/kung fu school, and would LOVE the opportunity to go to Hong Kong and visit the Shaolin temple, since he studies under a Grand Master who studied at Shaolin.

I want to take my friend Daniel to China with me. It just makes sense.

My fiance is jealous and says that taking another man to another country with me is crossing the line.

Fiance is an ex-Marine who has been to many difference countries and I haven't, and I'm a world history major. Of course I would take HIM with me to China, but he has no deep interest in it. Daniel on the other hand DOES, it's his dream.I would rather travel to a country with someone that's going to enjoy it as much as I do, not have someone "tagging along", just because. If that's the case, I'd rather just go by myself. What to do? :(

Taking another man with me to China, NOT my fiance?
tell your fiancee that daniel is going with you, and if he cant trust you , then you shouldnt be getting married in the first place. tell him, that you trust him, he could of picked up hookers in those countries and other stuff, make him feel guilty, tell him, you completely love him, and daniel has been there for you for ever.....
Reply:Well your NOT going to have this fiancee TOO much longer if he finds out..
Reply:Dump the boyfriend he will control you more when you get married. You must visit the cable car when you travel to the temple and of course Disney one will do it since the queues are not like usa.
Reply:If you are engaged, you should not be traveling to China for a period of time with another man, even if he is your friend. Your fiancee has a right to object, and I think you are putting your relationship with him in jeopardy if you go with Daniel.

\Chow!!
Reply:dont get canned
Reply:Sounds complicated. I may not have an answer but I do have a story. I went on a European vacation with a good friend's girl friend, the friend isn't the jealous type so there was no problem there. The problem was that the sexual tension between us made it really hard on me. I found myself wanting her more and more. We spent a night in Paris and it was the most romantic night imaginable. But I stayed strong and I resisted the urge to make a move. Jealousy is a horrible thing!
Reply:I can understand why your fiance wouldn't like it...

but I can also understand your situation and how you want to go with your friend since you both have similar interests.

I think your fiance should really trust you on this one. Even though it's not the best time to go on this trip since you're engaged, go on if you really want to.

NEED HELP FROM ALL MARTIAL ARTISTs!!! PLEASE!!!?

Okay, heres the deal- for the past 8 years [im 13 years old] I have taken Ju-Jitsu, Shaolin Kempo, and now Shaolin Kung Fu.

My problem is none of them are clicking, if you can understand. I dont feel like theyre the right style for me. I am fond of Japenese styles, but dont know which one to take. Around here I have the 3 I have mentioned, Tai Kwon Do, and some others that i dont know what style they are. For an art I would like a both lower and upper body techniques. Also preferably one with sparring, and maybe weapons.

NEED HELP FROM ALL MARTIAL ARTISTs!!! PLEASE!!!?
hey,

for 13 u sound very committed - well done.

I started karate when i was 5 - uechi-ryu - its a okinawan karate. i got my black belt at 12 and then i won the world championships in okinawa when i was 19, but then i wanted something different.

I strongly recommend KENPO....not kempo...KENPO. if you watch the movie "the perfect weapon" with Jeff Speakman - thats the style. I started it and have stopped. At 16 i also started Muay Thai...and went on to fight professional.

Its important that you keep your body and mind satisfied with what your doing. Dont do too many because you wont be "the best" at any of them.

keep keen - but give kenpo a go.
Reply:The arts that you previously studied are great arts. the problem may be your instructors or the school. All arts have something good to offer, it depends on the wilingness of the student to learn. Report It

Reply:I doubt that there's one school of martial arts out there that is absolutely perfect for you.

Jeet Kun Do is Bruce Lee's fighting system. He crafted his own fighting style from the best of other systems. Read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeet_Kune_D... . This sounds like a good answer for you.
Reply:I have always preferred grappling, it requires the coordination and strength of your total body. What better way to match your skills against another person of equal size. Join your local wrestling team, you will find rich rewards for many years.
Reply:Look into hapkido
Reply:So you know Shaolin Kung Fu ,Ju-Jitsu,Shaolin Kempo, don't lose your time for Tai Kwon Do Do the same as I do....I also know Shaolin Kung Fu Shaolin Kempo and Tai Kwon Do but i don't know Ju-Jutsu.

To do the same as I do Mix those 3 kind of fighting to create new moves or start learning "Parkur Fighting"....

I used those 3 styles to jump on walls or trees and fight (but if u do that be careful i brocke my arm one time ;D).

Doing that i feel super fighting in air flowing bettwen tree nad wall.....

Don't loose your time do something new .... mabey you will be teaching this new Jutsu some people later ;D
Reply:This is the most ancient and still alive form of martial art. I am sure this will satisfy you.

You may try to find kalarippayatt (also typed as kalari payat) masters in USA
Reply:I think you should take kick boxing next. It will go good with your ju jitsu to make you an overall fighter
Reply:I'd recommend Okinawan or Japanese Karate. Most places will also teach the weapons, kobudo.

At 13, I don't think you have really clicked with a style yet. I know what you mean, I've seen it in my students. They show up and go through the moves and are sometimes quite proficient. But they don't 'click.' I don't know how to describe it, but you see it in practitioners. My Sensei saw it in me immediately, but then, I started when I was 42.

And then suddenly the light goes on. I wish I knew how to make it happen for my students, but I always know when it does. I've seen it click for some 4 year olds. I've seen 16 year olds that haven't had it click yet.

Good luck! And be patient. You will find the right one.
Reply:At your age, you should probably concentrate on 1 style. Trying to learn 3 is bound to be confusing. I don't reccomend concentrating on weapons. Almost all arts include sparring %26amp; work upper %26amp; lower bodies. What is most important is finding the right school with the right instructor for you.
Reply:Here are some styles you may want to look at .

CHA-3 Kenpo

Kajukenbo

San Shou

Kali / Escrima / Arnis

Shotokan

Wing Chun

Western Boxing
Reply:For weapons, try Kendo. You don't really kick or anythng with it and it focuses on swords. You need upper body strength, especially in the arms, and the feet are used for balance mainly, unless you want tocombine different techniques with kendo then you can also use your feet. There is also sparring.
Reply:Well first you need to ask what the Nationality of the disciplines are for the ones that you don't know about. just call them up and ask if theirs is a Japanese discipline or not, if it is, go check it out to see if you like the class.

as for which discipline to take, if you find one that is a Japanese discipline you just need to see if they have a week's worth of trial classes you can take to see if you like the class.

most any Martial Arts discipline is gonna have an upper and lower body technique otherwise it would be a one dimensional fighting discipline like Western Boxing just learning how to throw effective punching strikes, and most any discipline is going to have sparring so that you can learn your timing and control, otherwise your not learning anything really.

and lastly, you shouldn't worry about weapons training, unless you plan on entering tournament circuits for creative weapons forms, because it's not a necessary aspect to learn.
Reply:I would seriously advice you to look in to Aikido or Jeet Kune Do
Reply:I'm a student in a form of jkd called the progressive fighting system. it doesn't only teach jkd but it incorporates Filipino styles such as Calli and eskrema. its not real flashy because its all about street fighting. the sparing, the weapons training, and ground fighting iv learned in pfs is great. you can learn more about pfs at fighting.net. its a lil expensive but its worth every penny.
Reply:Tae Kwon Do should be good for you. It's mainly kicks I must admit, but there's plenty of opportunity to get upper body techniques in there. They deal with weapons on occasion, depending on the school and they do a LOT of sparring. Plus, it's an Olympic sport and there are many competitions held all around the country (if you're into that sort of thing... that was my favorite part!)

P.S. you have great grammatical skills for a 13 y.o. impressive!
Reply:i take american karate and its a style derived from japanese, korean, and texas style boxing styles. it has weapons, sparring, hand techniques, leg techniques, arm locks, pressure points, and take downs. i really enjoy this style and maybe you would too. this is NAAMA karate schools. North American Alliance of Martial Arts and this is founded only in michigan that i know of. so i would suggest trying an american style or MMA. Good luck.
Reply:wow, at 13 you are an awesome fighter. but you should expand your preferances, not only to japanese, i was more partial to chinese style, then i started judo, it was differant, but it offered differant advantages over chinese and the chinese styles offer advantages over the japnese, so hang in there im 15 so i can relate to your problem.
Reply:upper and lower body work with sparring, sounds to me like you'd like kickboxing, muay Thai, san shou(chinese boxing) or even jeet kune do.. however there aren't many weapons involved in these arts..

most places will let you try out the class for free once, i'd recommend doing that and seeing if it feels like what you're looking for..

hope this helps!

Reply:In the long run you will benefit more from a good school than a good style. The quality and frequency of your training is far more important than the style you train in.

What do you think the next Mortal Kombat will be?

I expect the next Mortal Kombat game to be something like: Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks 2.

This time, The 2 Shaolin Monks go on a journey through the days of Mortal Kombat 3. I would expect them to meet Sheeva, Sindel, fight Shang Tsung again, and see Cyrax, Sektor, and Nightwolf, along with Stryker.

What do you think the next Mortal Kombat will be?

Hopefully the next mortal kombat will be like #4 and just be called MK5. and hopefully the fatalities will be better.

If your fiancee did this, would it be crossing the line?

Background Info: I'm 22 %26amp; studying world history in college. I'm planning on going on a short trip to China next Spring Break, something I've wanted to do for YEARS now. My close friend Daniel is a teacher at a martial arts/kung fu school, and would LOVE the opportunity to go to Hong Kong and visit the Shaolin temple, since he studies under a Grand Master who studied at Shaolin.

My fiance is jealous and says that taking another man to another country with me is crossing the line. We both have a history of cheating in our 7 year relationship that we've worked really hard to overcome, but how can we ever really trust each other if the first time it's tested is "crossing the line"?

Fiance is an ex-Marine who has been to many difference countries and I haven't, and I'm a world history major. Of course I would take HIM with me to China, but he has no deep interest in it. Daniel on the other hand DOES, it's his dream.

If there is so much past infidelity in your relationship then taking another man on this trip could quite possibly be crossing the line and could be the end of the relationship. The insecurity of those past indiscretions hasnt passed for him. How would you feel if he jetted across the world with some other chick... just as friends? Logically I think you are right... if he isn't interested then why not take Daniel?!?! However love isnt logical very often. He isnt comfortable with Daniel going so Daniel should stay home. Otherwise, you may lose him.

Just remember if the trust isnt there then losing him may not be a horrible thing. You may want to consider your decision on this matter as a sign on how much you value this relationship.
Reply:Although I can see your point of view it would hurt my feelings if I am not interested in a country but my fiance took another women to a country to fulfill her dreams? if that is the case why would he be marrying me you need to listen and respect your fiance wishes Daniel can go to China on his own time and his own expense and you can go to China on your own make your fiance dreams come true once you start making people dreams more important then the one your going to marry sorry but the marriage will be doomed from the start

Love the not so bitter Jaded Divorce' who left her husband when he took his Secretary to the Bahamas and not me LOL
Reply:Your history is the key.

You say you've worked hard to overcome the history, well that work never ends, Part of that hard work would be to forego the opportunity of bringing Daniel.. It makes no sense to take Daniel if you are commited to that work.

If it's his dream, Daniel can go anytime if he can afford it.

Your fiance may not have any deep interrest in China, but he dosen't have to have a deep interest in China to have interest in going there with you. (Even if it's just because you want him to.)
Reply:This really doesn't sound like a good idea. It does. however, sound like you're anxious to get the teacher out of the country. I think you should let Daniel dream on, unless you're willing to lose one of the "few and proud."
Reply:I definitely would NOT take another man. Only asking for trouble!

Ninedemonsgods and philip you give ma a very bad name.?

the truth about ma isn't about beating someone up. thats narrow minded. ma is self discovery , exercise ,self defence, among others. Shaolin martial arts should be givin proper respect. aswell as japanese, korean, thai ,isreali, brazil. but shaolin is and has deep roots. if not for people like them noone would know ma. the thing about range i said, for a wing chun man that is his range and you got chi sau all wrong. its an exercise that does increase sensitivity, but also works on footwork and mastering the centerline. the center is what is important to him. but thats besides the point ufc fighters are great fighters but in real life sitaution they won't have rules. then nature is to take its corse. but skill over strength should't be just tossed to the side. the point was you shoutn't call your self a m.artist and bash a style. Martial arts meant to stop fighting. respect one another. and the place we live, not argue about pointless opinions. I respect you but not what you said

Ninedemonsgods and philip you give ma a very bad name.?
I have to agree that people with such mindsets haven't learned the true meaning of Martial Arts, and this is truly sad.

But there's always gonna be a few of those bad apples who think that Martial Arts is more than defending yourself, your family, or those who cannot defend themselves.

these're always the kinds of people who're just mad at the world (it's just my opinion guys) and think they've gotta prove to someone; possibly themselves more than anyone else that they can pound someone's face into a bloody pulp.

I mentioned it before in another posting, that these types of people remind me of the John Kreese character in the Karate Kid movies, always emphasizing the physical side of Martial Arts, when it often has a spritual side to it as well, because if the physical side fails, what do you have to fall back on? They view Martial Arts as an offensive sport rather than a defensive art. and if it doesn't involve anything that the discipline's they've studied, they trash it by saying it's useless or an inferior discipline and boasting how the disciplines they've studied are the "best". when even their OWN disciplines have their weaknesses.

unfortunately the attitude that rests in the fist alone IS a fact of life, a stupid fact yes, but a fact nonetheless.

So yeah I wish these guys would have more respect for ALL Martial Arts instead of just fanning their own egos. because they do make good points (while they are few and far between I'm afraid, again it's my opinion) I don't always agree with their WHOLE answer because it seems to come from a bad attitude standpoint

and illiria, just because someones talking s**t to you, just means that it's all their doin' talkin s**t out their a**, and by thinkin' you gotta beat them senseless doesn't make YOU any better than them because your bringin' yourself down to their 6yr old mindset.

You DON'T have to let them beat you down in a fight, but you gotta be smarter than them, but and have the right to fight back.

but flying off the handle and kickin' their a** just because their talkin' s**t to you makes you look just as bad or worse when you should be above that mentality.
Reply:I regret that you morons are so narrow minded yourself that to you MA means eastern religious practices with kata Report It

Reply:Self defense is beating someone up. Also if people do not respect you and walk all over you, stab you in the back a few hundred times you are saying they should get away with that? What about verbal abuse is that OK for you too? No one respects anyone anymore. What cave have you been hiding in. If someone ***** with me I will kick their ***. That is why I trained. I will NOT tolerate *ssholes anymore.
Reply:What?! You may want to read this first:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

In this situtation I could have pound the guy's face until it's size of basketball ball then snap his arm into two with that arm lock. In second situtation I could have turn the knife against the man and kill him or hurt him more after he pass out. but I choose to not to do it! Do you really think I'm a bully and violent? Most people, even MAist would have go crazy and beat the hell out of guys in both situtation. I didn't because I have self control and respect for other living thing!

So are you saying Shaolin martial arts are perfect no matter what? When did I say anything bad about them? I simply say what make it so special compare to other? Are we suppose to worship Shaolin martial arts like as if it's holy of martial art? sorry but I don't bow to anyone but my Muay Thai instructor because he's one who train me and give me the skill.

WOW I answer one question wrong, go ahead and give me a "F" on my report card.

About UFC fighter. Well... Have you heard of Angelo Antuna? He was a wrestler... A VERY good wrestler. One time he got in a fight with this one guy. He totally destroy that guy. How? Simply by using his wrestling technique to his advantage. Let me show you the article:

http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_home/2...

Wrestling is a very rule oriented sport but Angelo manage to use it with great success. I've seen the video. So what do that tell you?

UFC and fight sport may be a sport but do you honestly think you can take on those guys? If so why don't you go to your local boxing gym or Muay thai gym and ask to spar and see what happen?

martial arts was develope for warfare fight! why would you learn martial arts if you are all about peace? That's like as arming yourself with a rifle and run around and preach about peace. You will look like a fool.

I and Philip are more of a Martial Artists than you will ever be! Why? because we actually train and test the technique out and learn what work and what don't work and compete against others with skill. by doing this we're bringing martial arts up to other level. Why would you keep your martial arts so not updated? That's like as using a horse when you can be driving a car.

So do yourself a favor before you say something stupid, go visit Muay Thai gym or a MMA gym and see what those guys are like and what they have to offer. Like as I say many time they're very nice people, not some caveman.
Reply:Many people use the term "martial arts" for any thing that resembles combat. Frequently, they are talking about fighting systems, or even specific fighting techniques. This is mostly due to ignorance. Don't be angry with them, rather you should pity them for their ignorance %26amp; for what they are missing by not participating in a true martial art.

How do I become a Yogi? or study buddism in a monastary?
Chad i recommend Siddha Yoga. one needs a teacher (Guru) that can give shaktipat (Baptize in spirit). See; syda.org/theguru. Swami chidvilasananda , she has the power to give shaktipat and there are meditation cerners all over the world. Practice Hatha Yoga it will keep your body in excellent shape. Approach the guru with respect.

how to grow pomegranate

If your way of life is 24/7 do you feel like a zealous person or say forget it.?

I am a practitioner of Shaolin Kung Fu. I only wish for us as a human tribe to understand that not alot of people understand compassion and should show compassion for people and things that do uncompassionate things for they dont realize their actions. Part of Shaolin Kung Fu is to relax and not be lusting or desiring advancement or power or anything really. But this lifestyle has changed my life for the better so much. I first wish to have the correct thinking to posses such abilities. I do not want to be a bully, a soul saver, a fool, an ***, self loving. I thank god for my abilities and pray he doesnt take them away.

I want to use the pressure points to heal people since I have woken a person from a drug overdose comma from one touch. But I realize this is desire even for good actions.

Then when I try to meditate and zone for a few hours in yoga, I find I have attachment for this lifestyle, thank god for my body and all its abilities. Attachment to the body is bad desire too.next-

If your way of life is 24/7 do you feel like a zealous person or say forget it.?

Reply:My way of life is 24/7 and I don't feel like I'm a zealous person. I just feel its the right thing to do, I'm happy about what I'm doing and allow other people the same privilege.

More about the original Five anscestors? (Not the books, the ones from Fukien)?

Can anyone surely and solidly with a base tell me more about the Fukien monks that survived? I've thought of asking the Shaolin Order(not the ones in Hunan, the ones in New York), but I don't want to hinder with questions unless no information can be aquired otherwise.

I want to know what the real truths and fictions are. Some say that there were eighteen but only the four monks and the nun survived, others say it was only them. Some say that the nun was later the mother of a woman named Wing Chun, who established and officially created the Wing Chun Kung Fu style. Some say a falling curtain spared the eighteen from the fire and allowed the five to escape, others say they hid and it was a miracle they made it out. Some say Ma Lingr was the traitor amoung them and he brought two men to set the Fukien Shaolin Temple to flames, and others that he brought an enitre army and faced them head-on. Please, if anyone knows the truths, please share. I am grateful for any information.

If your mostly better as a stand up fighter, and know some techniques such as joint locks and takedowns, but has little less experience on the ground like a BJJ black belt, how would you beat a BJJ black belt in a MMA rules fight? And Also, do you think a Shaolin Monk could beat somebody like a Gracie or a good BJJ black belt? im not saying that shaolin monks are the best, it is just because they are quick and can give some serious damage because they fight with alot of chi power and etc.

How to beat a BJJ black belt?
To defeat BJJ black belt, don't get on the ground. Train takedown defense, sprawl, get away and deliver punches. Don't kick, as this gives them a chance to unbalance you and take the fight to the ground. If you do end up on the ground, use a five point hold system. As long as you control three of the five main points of their body (Head, arm, arm, leg, leg), it is hard for them to improve position or gain a submission. Wrap up their head and arms with yours and work on improving your position instead. Once you're out of their guard, push off and stand back up to deliver punches again.

If you aren't as versed in ground defense/offense as they are, stay OUT of their realm. Just as they will continually try to stay out of punching range and try to take you down because they aren't versed in stand-up.

As for Shaolin monk, I'd say they have a fair chance since they also train chin-na which is chinese grappling, holds and takedowns included, as well as chokes and submissions. Any "pure" art is going to have a hard time against an MMA fighter, though. If a Kung Fu practicioner can stay off the ground long enough, they can pummel a BJJ student into the ground. But, likewise, is the BJJ student can put the Kung Fu student on the ground, he has a statistically higher chance of beating the opponent. That's how it works.

And as for the comment on Dim Mak, bone crushing, and people's spines wrapping around a punch, think clearly before making such wild claims. Kiai-do was once thought to be a genuine martial art, and then a Kiai master of some 20+ years got his *** kicked by an MMA fighter with about 2 years experience. The Kiai master showed his "abilities" off in a demonstration, punching thin air in front of *ahem* his own students. Magically, they fell down in pain. Then he tried the same BS on the MMA fighter only to find it didn't work. He ended up with a bloody nose, poor old guy. Dim Mak, or the "Death Touch", is a myth perpetrated by movies and shady martial artists, just like Kiai. Too much Bloodsport, not enough reality.
Reply:well go for the knees and do a takedown then locks on the ground doing ground and pound. thats your best bet. the shaolin monk would win because he does have speed and an all around fight style. but then again a monk wouldn't fight for any reason except to defend themselves.
Reply:I am not 100% sure if this would work but you know how a bjj person run towards your legs and try to take you down? Well, i think you should stay about 8 feet away from him or her, so that you'll have time to react their take downs and when the person start charging towards your legs, just knee them in the face!
Reply:with a gun from about 10 feet away
Reply:You grab a friend. A BJJ black belt has trouble beating up 2 thugs. Multiple opponent fighting is not its specialty.

I think most Shaolin monks don't understand English, so they'll have little knowledge of MMA rules. So, they'll win by eye gouging and biting. Shaolin trains teeth strong!
Reply:The masters of kung fu specializing in breaking legs, arms and Dim Mak. MMA is just for show and the big bucks. I have seen my kung fu master get attacked and he just punched the guy in the stomach. They guy was pretty big and was puking blood. My master told me that he felt the guy's spine wrap around his hand when he punched him. My master made it look effortless.
Reply:As someone who have done wrestling and kick boxing. I've also done judo and bjj. I'm currently training in all and boxing too.

I generally would try everthings to avoid bjj black belt.

The different between fight a strikers and bjj is, bjj guys usually doesn't consider fight over until they break your bones or choke you out. It's MUCH easier to get someone in a lock and break their bones than choking them out. So if you only got choke out, consider yourself lucky. The strikers would mostly just try to knock you out then leave.

However if I HAVE to fight one, I would try to keep my distance and to their side to make it harder for them to take me down. I would avoid clinch like plague. I would chops away at their legs and move away fast! If I end up in clinch, I would elbows the hell out of them and try to land on top then pulls away.

However I would have to say your chance of lasting more than a min with them if you aren't very experienced in grappling are very slim. Stand up wouldn't help too much either. It's very rare to hear of grappler being afraid to take a couple hard shots to get the strikers onto ground. They wouldn't mind take some hard blows just to get you on ground because in real fight, they would end up break something or choke you out.

Think about this, which would you rather to have happen, a couple nasty bruises, may lose a tooth, broken nose, or other similar things or would you perfer to have your limbs break into pieces? That's why it's very dangerous to fight them if you're not good at take down defense or grappling.

About knees to face while they try to take you down. That's VERY rare! Most of them are very aware of this and are used to it. In fact if you try, they probably would have even easier time to take you down because they would just grab your leg or push you off balance much easier.

As for Shaolin monk, they will not win. They're not use to the whole game. What look like a logically thing to do can easily get them submit.
Reply:to beat someone who has more experience in a specialist area, you DONT fight them in that area. so avoid fighting MMA rules or you may be doomed to fail.

the better fighter can be the one who can change his game to suit the situation, by not suiting the opponent. its easier to be a great fighter fighting your own style, but to beat other styles is the start of real proof.
Reply:work on your sprawl, and try to limit your kicks because a good grappler is just gonna catch your kick and take you down.
Reply:it's pretty hard to beat some one that has specialised in 1 field if you let them take you there.the rules restrict what a stand up fighter can do,no rules on the street is a completely different story.and also theres no referee?
Reply:If you want to beat a BJJ black belt you have to avoid the ground. However, people seem to be forgetting that by black belt level BJJ guys can do takedowns, in tournaments, they start standing.

However, without experience in some other kind of 'real' fighting, you're simply going to get taken down and submitted (and don't bother with street vs mat garbage argument -- a submission means you give up before they break the joint, but they don't HAVE to stop, they just agree to in tournaments. Position before submission means that it will be locked in before they start to break things, you aren't getting away).

You need to stand and strike and hope your striking is better. Of course most MMA fighters train striking. Nobody goes into MMA with just one skillset. So unless you have good level skills, you're not going to win.

It's been shown that the Shaolin Monks can't fight for real (ie: they can probably beat untrained people but not trained fighters). The reason is that they don't spar realistically so they can't use their many techniques in a real situation. If they trained their moves realisitically, maybe, but chi is not real, pressure points don't work, and if you use alive training, you will get beat by people who do.
Reply:To beat a BJJ black belt, you have to train diligently in takedown defense and try to make sure the fight doesn't hit the ground, if it does, don't go on the offensive, go solely defensive, even hugging to get the ref to stand it up.

As far as Shaolin monks. No, they could not beat any decent MMA fighter.
Reply:If your on the ground with them, just give up if they will allow you to. If not just sit back and wait for the pain unless you have some skills yourself.
Reply:Hope that you have longer reach than him!! Attack and evade!!
Reply:This is what I've been told about fighting since day one: Never box with a boxer, never kick with a kicker, and never grapple with a grappler. In other words, do something the other person doesn't know. Strike the grappler, but retract your hits quickly so they can't get a hold of them. Stay away from their close range.
Reply:Best bet is to focus on keeping at a good distance box him down, get quick effective kicks as so you wont leave a leg out there for him to catch, you will get taken down. If the fight goes to the ground get the hell up and do not ever expose your back while doing so.

Drills that cause you to get up, get out and create distance is what you want to focus on.

300 Shaolins Monks vs. 300 Spartans?

Seeing the previews of this new movie 300 makes me obsess over how badass the Spartans were. But Shaolin monks are like some of the best fighters in history also, and I think they might have more fighting skill. SO THE BIG QUESTION?? WHO WOULD WIN 300 SHAOLIN MONKS OR 300 SPARTANS?????

300 Shaolins Monks vs. 300 Spartans?
monks
Reply:i think the spartans would win, man that would be a sweet-*** fight Report It

Reply:let's not forget that shaolin monks practises qi-gong (i.e. a breathing technique that makes the body so invulnerable that any spear or sword wont penetrate the body) ^^ Report It

Reply:its not a spear but spears and if they are so invulnerable how come they aint rich. Report It

Reply:depends on which Spartans Ur talking about cause in the book series halo the amour clad fighters are also called Spartans contrasting to the Greek Spartans ,i think the monks would win because in the marital arts u r tough weapons defense so even in close range the monks would have an advantage Report It

Reply:no i think the spartans would win because of their weaponry, monks use their body and i dont think they can survive with their head skewered with a spear Report It

Reply:Spartan tactics favored large assaults. If it were a large scale battle, then the Spartans would take it. If the monks were smart enough to realize that and split the Spartan forces, then they would take the day.
Reply:I reckon it would depend on which of them was defending. The defenders would win. A straight up fight between to two... probably Spartans as the monks don`t go to war.

Of course 150 samurais would kick both there butts!
Reply:its obviously 300 spartans.........they trained for war........with weapons and armor........

the Shaolin monks did not like to see weapons, and ive never heard of any wearing armor.........plus they train to better themselves, not for widespread war.........
Reply:It depends. Shaolin study martial arts, they didn't invent anything! The farther back in time you go, they less the Shaolins know. I think going back 200 or 300 hundred years, the Shaolin would be easily much weaker, knowledge wise, than they are today. Then I'd give it to the Spartans as long as the Shaolin didn't use gunpowder.

In so California, are there any martial arts studios that train in "Bagua"?

don't know much about it myself. i've heard it's a really aggressive art that originally branched off from Shaolin. supposedly its almost as ancient as Shaolin...

In so California, are there any martial arts studios that train in "Bagua"?
There are you should google this and see what come up here in Cali, also you may want to check some of the links within my site especially the WW_WCKF site cause one of the members is a Bagua Xiang Master. So good luck there are many schools to choose from.

Reply:Baguazhang (also spelled, Pakua Chang)....has absolutely nothing to do with the Sui-Lum (Shaolin) systems.

The majority of the internal Chinese systems came from the Wudan mountain region....all except Xingyiquan, which came from Muslim Chinese.

Now, California and Bagua....I guarantee you will find Gwoons around the state with which to train Bagua. There is a MASSIVE amount of Chinese living within California that you'd likely trip over a Bagua studio accidently.

Just do a 'net search man, I'm sure you'll come across something.

Is this video real? how come no one else does this?

in youtube type in shaolin kung fu vs. karate. Scroll down until you find "VERY RARE FIGHT SHAOLIN KUNG FU VS. KARATE". are they masters? are they the only capable of doing this?tnx

Is this video real? how come no one else does this?
yeah.

these guys are, old old Old school. They are not masters. Even if they were masters. It still wouldn't look that different from the video.

That's how the Chinese people fight fought back in the day. and i guess they still do do it.

Bruce lee proved that their fighting style is old school and it doesn't work. Its more of an, art form, than practical fighting.
Reply:yes
Reply:Those guys are AWFUL!

Try blocks a real kicks like that, you'll mess your arms up badly. They keep move backward which is a big no no! What if those guy got stuck against rope/wall/cage/etc...? Neither of those guys bother to use their hands, knees, or grappling.

I wouldn't study under any of those guys.

Edit: beside that, I rewatch the video and the "karate" guy doesn't even look like a true karate guy at all. Karateka use their hands much more than their legs. yet this guy seems to rely 100% on his legs.
Reply:This is sparring, not fighting. There is a difference. Yes, Bruce Lee showed that the methods used in traditional martial arts where not efficient for actual street combat. However, those methods had been used centuries before Bruce was born. Even the great Bruce Lee gave in to his traditional ways for his movies. He did plenty of flying kicks that he would never endorse in his own dojo. These techniques look flashy, and in sparring, where judges are scoring you and your life isn't in danger, these techniques look cool and get the audiance to cheer.

Kung-Fu Movie Classics -- where do I start?

After reading The RZA's "The Wu-Tang" manual, I'm starting to get into kung-fu movies. But what are some kung-fu flicks/dvd's that you recommend as a foundation/starting point? I don't know where to start. I'm definitely looking for the movies "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" and "Shaolin and Wu-Tang" though.

I'm particularly referring to the Shaolin movies that influenced the rap group "Wu-Tang Clan." I'm guessing those are from the 70's and 80's. I own Enter The Dragon with Bruce Lee, and that's it. The other ones I own are newer movies, like Hero, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and House of Flying Daggers... I liked Kill Bill 1 %26amp; 2, although it's an American kung-fu movie, I thought it was still good.

Kung-Fu Movie Classics -- where do I start?
The ones that you mentioned and I really recommend any of Bruce Lee's movies(Enter the Dragon, Fists of Fury, The Chinese Connection)The Drunken Master(the original where Jackie Chan is the young student a must have!), Master of the Flying Guillotine, The Five Deadly Venoms, Shaolin Temple, Crazy Shaolin Disciples, Duel of the Iron Fists, Avenging Eagles, Fearless, Black Mask, Legend of Red Dragon just to name a few. I am a big martial arts fan. Funny ones are Kung Fu Hustle, and Rush Hour 2.
Reply:Try watching Shaolin Temple 1,2,3 by Jet Li
Reply:anything with Bruce Lee
Reply:There are so many - I don't even know where to start. I would have to say the starting Kung-Fu flicks for me was a Bruce Lee movie called "The Chinese Connection"

I am saying it all started with Bruce Lee because he was well known and basically all I knew of as a kid.

I do remember though - watching Kung Fu movies on Saturday or Sunday afternoons on channel 5 (NY) There are just so many. Check out Shogun Assasin or The 5 Deadly Venoms.
Reply:big trouble in little china
Reply:I hate to tell you this but it's kinda like one of those things that you kinda grow up with.

You can't just absorb it all up in a couple of weeks. The members of Wu Tang are from my generation, we were kids in the 70's and 80's and that's when Kung Fu theater came on Saturdays and Sundays.

It's something we grew up with. The suggestions that you were given are cool but it's really a generation thing!
Reply:Any of the Bruce Lee movies are good choices. Don't forget the television series Kung Fu with David Carradine either.

Lol, Big Trouble in Little China, what an awful suggestion but funny at the same time.
Reply:Any of jackie chan's drunken master movies would be good. Also his version of fist of fury. If you are looking for some modern ones try looking up tony Jaa's movies. They're not kung fu but Muay Thai, but still really good. Also go to Ripetv.com and look for a show called Kung Faux. They take old kung fu movies and dub in voices its real funny.
Reply:The big boss, then fist of fury, then sholin versus ninja.

Looking for a kung fu movie I watched when I was about 10 years old but can't remember the name of it?

The story line goes something like this: guy wants to enter a temple (Shaolin I think) to learn kung fu but he can't until he proves himself. He is hired to build a scaffold around the temple. During the time that he is building the scaffold, he can see over the wall and view the current skills being taught in that specific area. Over time he masters the skill being taught while he is on the scaffolding and becomes a master without having entered the temple. It's not Shaolin Master Killer or the 36th Chamber of Shaolin since these are both the same movie. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Traditional Mixed martial arts?

where i live at ive been seeing alot of traiditional mixed martial arts schools. And if you think about it shaolin martial arts where the original mixed martial arts. Alot of styles contributed by alot of people to one place. Lately in particular i seen a kung fu school that teaches shaolin Chuan Fa,southern mantins boxing, kempo karate, and Brazilian jujitsu

Then i see another school that is goju-ryu and judo. I think its pretty cool. I finally dont feel alone in this principle, other people are doing it too. I mean at the shaolin temple you learn everything that an MMA school learn and more. San shou kickboxing, shuai jiao wrestling , Qin Na submissions, Traditional fighting techniques, plus Qi gong and meditation.

But i think its really cool how some traditionalists and MMA coaches are fusing together to make a unique self-defense program......any thoughts or expereinces

Traditional Mixed martial arts?
In the short while that I have studied Martial Arts I have came to a conclusion, as many I'm sure would concur, it is not only okay, but I would argue it is necessary to become a better martial artist. I do, though, advocate the preservation of each of these martial art cultures/styles. Mainly in order for the next person to get the same experience as the last, and moreover, for those who wish to draw only from it, be allowed to do so.
Reply:I've actually seen some video showing Rickson Gracie (or one of the Gracies) doing yoga and meditation and talking about how it helps his MMA. Crosstraining and an open mind will be an asset. If you find something in your area that looks good, give it a try. If it's good, train. If it sucks, move on.

"Traditional" is a hard word to define for martial arts. BJJ is based on Judo which has a long background. Muay Thai is one of the most popular striking arts in MMA, but it has a long history too. Martial arts has always been changing and evolving and will continue to change.

Just make sure what you study is good quality and effective. The age old formula: spar regularly with a fully-resisting partner (not just compliant drills) and look for schools with MMA competition experience.
Reply:To me martial arts is so much more then fighting. It's an understanding of everything from dirt to the stars. Sun Tzu once said to win a fight without fighting is a great thing(something like that)
Reply:fully agree

san soo is a mixture of the old warrior arts, thus a mixed martial art. It is called the 5 family art, having 5 families of study. This has been this way since when Lo Sifu Jimi H. Woo brought it here from China and became the legend he is, and shall always be. It stresses kick punch style, throws, take downs and ground fighting. Throw in that the way to do this is thru Ho ga pressure point and Li Ga leverages, as well as Hung Ga power and strength, and Fut Ga is the psychology of it all or how to put it together.

Now if you follow this concept, that means learn it all if you can. There is no best way, only whats is best available to you and how you use and apply it all to your life. MMA is a concept that has been used by the wisest and will always be. That is why we had to resort to it as a way to stay alive in an MMA style competition.

The old UFC is still alive, it is evolved. None of the old fighters look the same. They have evolved with the sport, getting a ground game where needed and a stand up if thats the case. Traditional is MMA, just depends on your goal when you enter MA. You can go to become a great fighter or great teacher. Both are cool, just the needs are different.

It has evolved to where it has to be, not anyones single choice. It is funny when people say this wont or that wont work, well it is. MMA is rad, man today we all have better choices, take advantage of em.

Why is it that Americans will think the Samurai as the strongest warrior in the East back then?

I would say is the monks from shaolin temple. They train from they r kids. Their training is very disciplined and tough. The know how to use a whole arsenal of weapons. They train so hard...the concrete ground actually lumps in after years of stomping on the same spot! How can a samurai stop a monk who is spinning a spear head attached to a rope 180 miles/hour? Watch Kill Bill 2? Shaolin monks and other masters of kung fu toys with samurai's skills.

But Americans in general like Samurai (ex: the last samurai). Why is that?

If it's about their lifestyle then please realize that the lifestyle resembles the ones of monks in shaolin, just no women.

Why is it that Americans will think the Samurai as the strongest warrior in the East back then?
Those monks can do some amazing stuff. But they weren't in actual wars as often as samurai were. Japan was under constant civil war in the golden age of Samurai, and they saw plenty of action.

I think Americans emphasize most with the Samurai because of how similar they are to European Knights. We're very familiar to the idea of knights being brave and strong heroes, not so much with the warrior-monk concept.
Reply:1- the monks are overrated- this comes from chop socky flicks.

2- the samurai are overrated- this comes from anime.

3- your knowledge of weapons and how they are used is sorely lacking. I'll bet you actually think jet li was using that spear properly and wouldn't have been killed in one scene against that cavalry officer in fearless.
Reply:LOL BLUTO!!! I said that exact same thing when we watched fearless!!!! I said that he would have been owned seeing as he did NOT beat him..... the guy had him dead to rights....

its people like this.... that watch tooooooo much anime and way too many movies.
Reply:Romanticism and the movies!
Reply:OK,

1 weapons experts say that a beginner to intermediate swordsman in the Chinese way will beat a beginner to intermediate Japanese swordsman. how ever when one becomes a master at the sword the scale tip dramatically. the Japanese were by far the fastest with swordsmen ever. other weapons. the naginata is by origin the Japanese. a swinging spear is easily cut. the katana is the lightest, sharpest, and strongest sword.

2 samurai were also trained as children. they were sent to schools to learn every single form of martial art known to japan, with heavy training in the sword and naginata. sai's and nunchaku took a smaller percentage of there time.

3 they never fought and if they did it would have been the bloodiest war of all time, so I'm happy the did not.

I do not care which is better I simply like the simplistic Japanese styles more.
Reply:Monks aren't soldiers. In the grand scheme of things, they matter little in terms of warfare. Samurai was a class of elite soldiers with social standing, economical status, and martial measurements associated. The Chinese didn't have distinct and easily identifiable elite soldier classes through out history. Soldiering didn't measure high on the list of Confucian values. Mostly, war was dirty work, and it just had to be done by the drafted poor. While there were elite fighting units in China during various periods, none of them is as enduring as the Samurai class of Japan.

Many martial artists in China would argue that Shaolin monks are far from the best practitioners China has to offer, empty hand or weapon-wise. While Shaolin monks supposedly wield one mean staff/bo, the best spear and saber work were in the army (where if you fail you die,) and the best straight-edge sword play are from Taoist disciplines.

Rope darts in movies are just plain bad. In reality, they are small darts that were meant to be hidden on the body to save your life. Surprise is its biggest advantage. You don't just brandish the dart at the first opponent you see and expect the next guy to fall for it too. It shouldn't come out until you are running away for your life. It's an one shot last resort, not a weapon of mass destruction.

Do not base an argument on what you saw in a movie, especially Kill Bill. This is exactly why Americans worship Samurai. Real weapon work isn't flowery. The very effective Chinese Dadao/Kandao has only 8 simple moves and was the only consistent battle proven counter to the Katana short of a gun.
Reply:Let's take movie hype out of the equasion.

Both monks and samurai trained from childhood, and remember that thier life span was vastly shorter than ours today. In both cases, individuals and individual schools/temples specialized in different weapons. It is rare for an individual monk or samurai to be an expert skilled in many weapons. Both were warriors of a type: the samurai were soldiers serving their lord, the monks fought to protect their temples and rights to worship.

Americans idolize the samurai... possibly they do. Anime is popular now. For years, the monks had the public eye via TV.

Personally, I think the thing Americans find most attractive is the philosophy attached to these groups. The concept of living your life to the fullest and being willing to die at any moment portrayed with the samurai is appealing. The willingness to put your life on the line for your beliefs like the monks is also appealing.

Who do you think would win?

1) Shaolin Monk vs Bruce Lee

2) Wudang Priest vs Bruce Lee

3) Shaolin Monk vs Muay Thai boxer

4) Wudang Priest vs Muay Thai boxer

5) Shaolin Monk vs Modern Combat fighter

6) Wudang Priest vs Modern Combat fighter

7) Bruce Lee vs Yip Man ( Bruce Lee's sifu)

Who do you think would win?
Chuuuuck Norrrriiiiissss!!!!!!!!!!!

2 - not sure

3 - shaolin monk

4 - who ever hits first

5 - what type of fighter? shaolin monks are "modern fighters"

6 - not sure

7 - Grandmaster Ip Man
Reply:1 and 2 Bruce Lee will beat both Monk and Priest because they use to quiet meditation in the Shaolin temple and Wudang mountain, and Bruce shrieky scream will annoy and distract them.

3 and 4 Muay Thai boxer will beat both Priest and Monk because Priest and Monk are honorable individuals who will fight clean, on the other hand Muay Thai boxer will fight dirty.

5 and 6 Modern Combat Fighter will win against both Monk and Priest because again Monk and Priest are people of high status so they will refuse to roll around in the dirt, they don't have a ground game, as soon as the Modern Combat Fighter take them down it's over, they will be submitted by armbar.

7. Bruce Lee will win...at first they fight using Winchun kungfu, Master Yipman have an upperhand because he taught Bruce all Bruce know, I am sure he kept a few moves for himself so he is winning the fight at first, but Bruce are very smart, he would switch to Jeet Kune Do, something Master Yipman is not familiar with, so he surprise the Master with a straight 1 inch punch while Yip Man try to trap his arm and accidentally knock him out. Bruce would apologize afterward.

How Did Ancient Martial Artists Develop A Body Of Steel???

The shaolin monks and other martial artists of the ancient world had such powerful and intense bodies that even if a dog were to bite them, the teeth of the dog would fall off.

Apprarently they practiced some special Tai-Chi which harnesses the magnetic power and energy around us and can make our bodies invincible. I think the Tai-Chi was called Qui-Qong or something but I can't be sure.

Does anyone know what the art was called and whether or not it is possible to replicate such miracles in the contemporary world. Anyone that has ever seen a show of shaolin monks will surely know that these miracles are very much with us today but shaolin monks are secretive.

How Did Ancient Martial Artists Develop A Body Of Steel???
You need to research this under "Iron body Qui Gong" where a martial artist builds strength over time by conditioning his/her body via various methods such as striking with objects such as fists, wood dowels, or leaning against the end of a rounded pole (such as placing a pole up against a wall and putting the other end against the abdominals, then leaning into it to build strength and tolerance to force).

Let me say that any activity that causes pain can also be used to condition your body.

The easiest way to start this training is to condition your fists, elbows, and shins, and I will tell you how:

1. Fists and elbows: Get a short piece of 2X4 lumber. Start slowly tapping the board at multiple punching/striking angles. Only do this to the point of discomfort, not with intense force as you must gauge this over time. For the elbows you can hold the board in one hand and strike with the elbow over and over. Again, take this slowly.

2. Shins, take a short piece of wooden dowel (about 1 inch diameter) and lay on the floor and roll the dowell up and down the length of your shins. Take this slow, as it can actually cause the skin to redden and scab before it toughens. This happened to me...lol. As your shins toughen you can begin tapping along the length of the shin to the point of tolerance. Later you might be able to kick lightly against a round wooden beam, but again, be careful.

Soon you will feel your fists, elbows and shins harden, and they will feel almost like steel. Many strikes that hurt you at first will have no sensation of discomfort at all. In fact the feeling can be one of power and it can feel good.

I hope this helps, look into books on the subject of Qui Gung, and you will find many more details.

Reply:Tell that to the Shaolin Monk that stood up to the western import of guns - his belief that his body was impenetrable cost him his life as the bullet went straight thru him - dead as a doorpost - on the spot.

Don't believe everything you read in the papers or see in films or on TV
Reply:LOL

You said:

"martial artists of the ancient world had such powerful and intense bodies that even if a dog were to bite them, the teeth of the dog would fall off." That's because canine dentistry wasn't what it is now!

Addendum for Bodler the toddler:

You call us idiots, yet you freely admit to allowing others kick you in the stomach and thighs! Ha, ha, ha. God, if it wasn't for 'tards like you, my life wouldn't be worth living! Thanks for giving me a laugh. Also, where's the hate? You are the only one getting all riled up! lol :-)
Reply:Dont listen to these idiots haters, what ever you wanna acheive you can do. I am not a 100 percent sure how to be like that, but in my class with practice alot of iron body training, such as kicking each other on the stomach, tighs, and elbow banging etc.

And I also do Qi Gong exercises at home, I kinda feel the diffrence when we train and I get punched on the kidney, I feel less pain then before.

Well try to do some iron body traning and chi exercises, also try to find some school that teachs that, and best of all, don't listen to f*ckung haters!!
Reply:The belief in forms for health in the past also called sutras in India played a major role in body development, so much so that Bodhidharma taught 2 of these to the Shaolin in Hunan so as to increase their strength.

Today alot of folks laugh at forms thinking they are no help in fighting, simply because they lack the insight to see how they develop your body naturally.

Stretching, balance, strength, eye hand, foot cooridination timing skills all play a part in forms skills. BJJ , Judo has no forms, and may I add no weapon skills either as a result.

All arts that teach Forms or Kata also teach Weapons, just about all that do not teach Forms or Kata have no weapon skills either.
Reply:People can get very very tough through training but the human body will never be invincible. Grow up.
Reply:I've got a bridge in brooklyn to sell you...

The ancient martial artists were tough, but not invulnerable.

What you need to do is get off your computer and go work out and train. Meditate, exercise - and learn.

Chasing myths is pointless.
Reply:A lot of that is myth used to add to the mystique of the Shaolin order. Part of this was done by the monks themselves to warn away potential attackers, part of it was done by the emperors of China wanting the enemies of the empire to fear the tools at his command and part of it is plain legend of time. Over time these stories grow so instead of being hard and powerful fighters they are now seen as having been invincible.

You can't believe most of these legends, even the modern day Shaolin temple says most of them are false and that they never had such abilities. Similar legends abound about the Ninjas.

However the Shaolin monks did practice Qi Gong to harden their bodies. Many people still practice this today and some claim they can take knife attacks that bounce off them. I don't know if these are true or not but you can train in Qi Gong in many parts of the world. On top of this the monks did practice body hardening exercises daily. They would punch and kick walls to harden their hands and feet, they would hang by the neck to the point of almost suffocating to harden the neck, they would take slaps and even punches to the head and stomach to harden them and learn to endure pain. These are no mystery, the body is resilient and adaptive, if it is used to pain it can take a greater level of pain before sending warning messages to the brain. Many fighters still use similar training methods today to harden their bodies, even going to the extreme of breaking bones so they grow back stronger.

2- The bullshido art you are thinking of credited with "energy around you" would be either qui-gong or becoming a jedi.

while you might think it is funny to mention a completely fictitious art that came out in a sci fi film. It is important to note the hypocrisy that people have when they mention the "force" and learning to lift objects, create energy barriers and as obi kenobi said "its an energy field" in the first movie (the 1979 one).

I now ask you how that is seen as fiction, which it obviously is, but "qui gong" is not, when it purports to do the same thing.

"manipulate the energy around you to produce results, take and manipulate people's 'energy'"?

how is qui gong any less fictitious than yoda?
Reply:It's not a myth.

If you're strong spiritually you can even move mountains.

Try tai chi, or any other form of martial discipline.

Develop your body, your mind, and gradually you'll have strong spirit which is the god within you.

You'll be a god... invulnerable.
Reply:Pure Hollywood I am afraid, very entertaining but not within the realms of reality, maybe you could make some money from copyrighting the movie rights (?) tee-hee
Reply:Do you really believe people got as hard as steel, dogs couldn't bite them for fear of breaking teeth? I am sorry, no disrespect but look at this critically. It just doesn't seem logical.

I am sure people from this time period were in better shape then modern Americans, they had no TV's, fast food, cars, computers, etc. The weak ones died early life and usually did no get to breed. Life was about survival then, now a days it is about material goods, convenience and luxury.
Reply:they did it with myth and anecdotal retelling. when ever anyone is given a beating, the enemy was always twice as big, twice as strong, twice as fast, and able to catch bullets. no different then, no different now.

if you want to beat your enemies better, forget the iron skin, and focus on the soft spots of the enemy.
Reply:Hans..you have certainly been given some "interesting" answers, the sad thing is that you have an affiliation to martial arts which makes you suggestible to nonsense. Unfortunately martial arts has no written history that can be taken as facts, therefore, all you hear from the past are mainly legends and myths. We live in an age where knowledge is available to all those who seek it. Mass education is a modern invention, once upon a time only a few privileged people were educated enough to understand the body. For example the "iron fist" that would kill someone three days later after being punched, may have been an enigma in by gone days, but now we know that a solid and powerful punch on the body, may damage an organ, leading to internal bleeding and death at a later date if not treated. This lack of basic understanding then, would have enhanced the reputation of the puncher in the eyes of simple minded witnesses, and like the tale of the small fish caught by the fisherman, it eventually became a Whale.

Furthermore, within the same context, we are not feuding with our neighbours, people are in martial arts for a variety of reasons, a body of steel may look great on superman, but pure mortals still get stab and shot, even the best from any martial arts. Ignore those men of steel trying to pump up their egos and stick to reality. your best weapon is your mind, use it often. Good Luck.
Reply:If you become a master in any martial you will have a body of steel. For you prats on here just go to You tube and you will see REAL videos of examples of what martial arts can do. I bet most of you have never seen a martial artist in real life you properly got your knowledge from rubbish movies like the Matrix or Dead or Alive. Bloody fools
Reply:I don't believe anyone can develop a body of steel like you are describing. I have never seen this. I have seen a lot of magic tricks at exhibitions, but deception is part of competitive martial arts.

It sounds like the art you are looking for is Qi Gong. It is often pronounced as "Chi or Chee Gong" in the Western Tongue but the actual pronunciation has ZY in it that doesn't exist in the English language. To make it easier maybe search for Chi Gong.

The meaning of the word "Qi", is essential life force. The origin is the ancient text "Secrets of the Yellow Emperor" which might be available in English now. If not then they are still working on the translation.

Qi Gong practitioners utilize exercises and a lifestyle that maximizes the energy in the body. Masters of this art use it in everything from medicine to self-defense.

Tai Chi is a form of Qi Gong which means "energy practice". This life-force theory is also known as Mana in other cultures, also in Sanskrit I believe. Tai Chi is not a martial art though. It is practiced as a dally exercise for health, more like yoga.

Kung Fu is the martial art of Qi Gong theory. Both Shaolin and Wah Lum practice essential energy exercises.

Should I add anything to my eclectic Wu Shu style?

Bruce Lee (Li Jun-Faan) studied Wing Chun, but he later developed his own "Jit Kun Do". A Sifu Hung combined his Tiger and his wife's Crane plus some moves from the 3 other Shaolin animals and Hsing-I's 5 Element Fist to create the best of the 5 Shaolin family styles. I add styles of Japan, Korea %26amp; Tibet to my "Wu Da Wu Shu". "Wu Da" = 5 Strikes, for 5 symbolizes completeness in China, e.g. 5 peoples, 5 music notes, 5 elements, etc. Wu Shu means Martial Arts. (Kung Fu denotes Great Achievement in any field.) To start you off, I tell you one of my 5 Hits is Chang Jiu Shou Da = Long-Distance Hand Blows. For this, Choi Li Fut's "Windmill Fists" are best, but Northern Shaolin techniques are close. I use about 50% CLF and 40% NS. The other 10% is a mixture of other Chinese Shaolin styles, Japanese Goju Kai, Korean Tae Kwan Do, Tibetian Pak Hak Pai, etc. My other 4 strikes are Jung Jiu Shou Da, Dwan Jiu Shou Da, Di Ti %26amp; Gau Ti. What are they? What styles should I use for them?

Should I add anything to my eclectic Wu Shu style?
I guess that it depends on what you are using this for. If you mean for Wushu competetions and forms competetions then there are a variety. (Jet Li won 5 National Wushu competetions with Fanzi Eagle Claw).

If you mean for actual combat, then go with what you find as effective. (Bruce Lee himself said if you taught a good boxer wrestling, he could beat any Kung Fu master). Best way to find effectiveness is through sparring and competetion. Sanda (San Shou) is great for that.

Additionally i have some questions...

"5 music notes" there are 7 (A-G) far more if you count sharps and flats, harmonics, and the like.

You really seem to know your stuff though, good luck to you. I guess what would help is if you mentioned the purpose of this.

Combat, Wushu forms competetions, personal development, etc.

Good luck to you.
Reply:It depends on your goals. It sounds like you want to be a movie star. If so, the styles you have should suffice, now work on your acting skills.

How can I learn to block out physical pain, like Shaolin Monks?

I want to figure it out, so I can learn how to be strong.

How can I learn to block out physical pain, like Shaolin Monks?
They dont. They do conditioning. If you dont want your balls to hurt anymore when you get kicked in the nuts drag weights around tied to your nuts a few times a day like the shaolin monks do. If you dont want your fists to hurt anymore when you punch punch somethin a few hundered times a day.
Reply:GO TO SHAOLIN TEMPLE USA TO LEARN THE REALL CHINESE KUNG FU ! SHAOLIN MONKS LEARN THE CHI KUNG WHEN THEY ARE ONLY 6 YEARS OLD.
Reply:I'd look into self-hypnosis. If you have a talent for it, it could work very well for you. Some people use it during surgery instead of anesthesia.

I can't remember if it's an Idiot's Guide or a Dummies book on hypnosis, but whichever one is by Roberta Temes, that's a good place to start.

Good luck!
Reply:Look at it from a combat point of view.

Blocking out physical pain does not neceassaily make you more effective-otherwise boxers and soldiers would be on xylocaine.

You will still get knocked out without feeling pain, your bones can still be broken, and organs and muscles cramp up from heavy impact.

In other words its better just to do what pro fighters do. Get very fit, very hard bodied, and very focussed.

Adrenalin takes away 95% of pain anyway.

Anything that gets through is a useful warning something is wrong and you better start winning the fight soon.
Reply:pain is telling you that your body is in trouble. I lived in China %26amp; Taiwan for a long time studying Mandarin Chinese and studying Martial arts...A lot of that Monk stuff is fake, they wear a cup when kicked in the joint..Only a rare few can retract their testicles into their abdomen region. Learn martial arts well and you will be able to truly deal better with the pain
Reply:Why would you want to? Pain tells us when there is something wrong. If you feel no pain then how would you know when to get medical attention. I have seen numerous people condition their hands to the point that they can break anything. I have also seen many of these people develop arthritis and other debilitating conditions because of such training. If you want to be a good fighter, work on your techniques. Don't punish yourself. On a side note, If you don't have a proper teacher to teach you this type of conditioning then you will hurt yourself. Possibly permanently.

Good Luck
Reply:There's no such thing as blocking out pain, (unless you somehow have dead pain receptors)

Pick up a few meditation books. Being strong is not avoiding pain, it's overcoming it.

Although this does remind me that when I was like 10 I somehow got into the mindstate that pain was just another feeling, like hot or cold. I could stick my hand on hot summer burned glass, (which my cousins were quickly pulling their hands back off of) I was twisting my own skin out of boredom, and sticking my hands in hot water. (stupid kid I was) However, as hard as I try I cannot get into that mindstate again.

Just remember that you exist in your mind, not your body. Your body is just a vessel.
Reply:Whiskey, lots and lots of whiskey : P Why do you think they created the Drunken fist style? : D
Reply:LOL shoalin Monks cant "block out" physical pain , let me put one in an armbar , and we will see how they can block out their arm being broken. Most of that crap is hollywood stuff man. The only way you can increase your threshold for pain , is by getting in the ring and sparing with heavy hitting apponents , and lift weights as well , strong lean muscle is like armor for the human body.
Reply:What everyone said but pain is good it tells you when your body is in danger.
Reply:Train. Then train some more. When finished with that you MUST train more. It comes down to conditioning which comes from training long and hard.

It is not that they don not feel pain ( they do) it is that they have trained to go beyond it.

Pain is a necessary thing. Your body's way of communicating danger to your mind. It is your early warning system. Some people have a lower threshold than others. Everyone can train to endure some higher level of pain.

It takes the Shaolin Monks years of intense training to perform their feats.
Reply:Do they block it out or are they just not emotionally attached to it.

It hurts so what fighting is supposed to hurt live with it.

It is probably that they accept pain as a likely consequence .To accept and expect something is the 1st step in ignoring it when it happens and continue with the fight.

If you can't accept the possibility of being hurt and dealing with it take up knitting even then you might jab yourself with a needle accidently.

To be hurt and be finished are 2 different things. The only time you wont feel pain is if he knocks you unconcious then you hurt later.

Pain is a spur to redouble your efforts.
