WHATS your opinion on shaolin?

yea im a martial arts guy so expect a lot of questions like this

WHATS your opinion on shaolin?
I wished it was around in my neighborhood, NYC Chinatown, when I was a kid. Great style. The worldwide Shaolin monastery system, due to asylum laws, was the central repository for defeated generals, fugitives, and retired fighters for many centuries in China, Japan, and other South-East Asian countries. Temples have been burned and the sect purged multiple times by non-sectarian authorities in many jurisdictions.

At various times the system has included tiger, leopard, dragon, crane, snake, bear, deer, praying mantis, eagle claw, Wing Chun, Pak Mei, Wu Mei, and even Taijichuan. It is the predecessor to Kempo, Kenpo, Shorin-ryu, Shotokan, Shito-ryu, Wado-ryu, %26amp; Taekwondo, and MooDukKwan. Emphasis on flexibility, speed, and gymnastics. Lot's of long range attacks and various methods of generating power.

Good teachers have mastered excellent Shaolin Qigong styles including Golden Bell, Tendon Changing, and Light Skill, as well as real fighting skills.

Bad teachers can usually do a pretty form or two.
Reply:Bald guys.
Reply:i take shaolin kempo, they are very disciplined arts.
Reply:I saw an add in the local martial arts magazine about a guy who came back from a shaolin temple and is talking about how much more money he will make by teaching private lessons, he charges an arm and a leg I guess and teaches only to those who can afford it, the guy has a full robe and bald head and everything in the magazine and yet he is blatantly stating that he will only share his art with rich people, I bet he paid through the nose too to study in China, this didnt give me the best impression of it

It's the only experience of Shaolin I have had so, this is just what I expereinced, you dont see many shaolin schools around
Reply:well i picture bold guys and o yeah read of a guy in a mangazine that studied on a sholin school or something and now he teaches rich people and also i think sholin is the root of most martial arts and a powerfull art in terms of speed, power and everything.(please can you make me the best answer please I'm desperate)
Reply:pretty vague question, why do you ask?

Just taking a poll?

If you're a martial arts guy then what is it you're asking to isolate aspects of Shaolin?
Reply:I think shaolin martial arts in itself is absolutely awesome. It incorporates so much that exists out there. Yes it is rather expensive to learn the art in China but yet still a great honour. I had a look into it, thought of going there for about 6 months or so but needless to say i couldn't afford it.

I have done Shaolin Martial Arts for about 5 years and eventually had to stop as it got too expensive for me. Also I got the impression that if you are really good you sort of get forgotten so there was no room for progress through the kwoon's system. I know of senior students that have been on the same level for 2 to 3 years longer than what they should have been and they are good. I also did some private lessons which were costing me an arm and a leg and I didn't get any further. It seems the more serious I was about it the less interested they were in me. Anything that you wanted to learn you had to pay extra for at no discounted price.

Never the less, I quit and tried looking for other Shaolin places that were as disciplined and traditional and also weren't so expensive. I'm still looking (for Shaolin that is).

In general I think Shaolin is headed that way - for the rich only.
Reply:Exotic weapons. If I ever try studying it, it will be because of the weapons training and not because of the empty hand styles.
Reply:Shaolin - gets more credit than it deserves. A lot of people think kung fu STARTED at Shaolin temple and believe before that there was no kung fu. Not true. Shaolin certainly brought Chinese martial arts to a higher level, but to ignore pre-Shaolin martial arts is to ignore a large part of Chinese history. Still, Shaolin kung fu is awesome. I had the pleasure of briefly studying the southern 5 animal style and the techniques are incredible.
Reply:The monestary is very nice, the monks are very humble, They are very good at kung fu, and are excellent examples of peaceful people.
Reply:Shaolinn is Shorin in Japan, have many styles in it, 5 animal styles, 5 family styles, unorthodox styles too, Wing chun, mantis, drunken, and more. Something for every one. My lover study several Shorin and Shaolin styles.
