Where is the Shaolin Temple in China and is it worth visiting?

I'm planning on going to China this year. Should I include a stop at the Shaolin Temple as part of my tour?

Where is the Shaolin Temple in China and is it worth visiting?
I've been to Shaoling Temple twice now. In fact I live about 3-4 hours away. It's a great place to see, and it is a lot more then a one attraction sight. There are temples, museums, a pagoda forest, training halls, a theatre where you watch demonstrations, and three different mountains that you can either climb or take the cable car, each with there own unique sights at the top. See the following link for more info:

If you are going to travel through this area of China I would suggest that you also visit the city of Luoyang which is just an hour or more away from Shaolin. Luoyang is home to the Longmen Grottoes which were started in 493AD. A really interesting place packed with culture. It's a bit to much to explain here, so just follow the link below for a good decription with pictures.

Luoyang also has the White Horse Temple, which was the first Buddhist temple in all of China (first constructed in 67AD)

Luoyang is a nice city with lots to see and do. Make sure you visit the antique market underneath the horse and chariot statue in the central square of dowtown. Since you only need a day trip to go to Shaolin, you can get a hotel in Luoyang, and take a tour bus from the main train station to Shaolin. They leave every half hour in the morning, and are around 30-50 Yuan (RMB) Or, you can hire a taxi for the day, so that you can take your time, and see things on your terms. I believe the Taxi cost about 300 Yuan (RMB) around 40 US$.

Hope this helps, and I hope you have a great time on your trip through China. I should also mention that there is a rail-line that goes straight from Luoyang to Xi'an if you are interested in going there to see the Terracotta Warriors (Perhaps the second most important thing to see in China, next to the great wall) You can find a reliable train schedule here:

Reply:ya you get to see all the monks working on their kung-fu
Reply:The Shaolin Monastery is located in the Songshan mountains in the province Henan. This is in the middle of china and on a mountain. This place is a single attraction place. There is not much to see besides mountains. But you can spend some spiritual moments in the monastery.

Is it worth going? Yes, if you have a lot of time. But it is not my prefer place to go. I would go visit yellow mountain before shaolin.

GL.

Reply:it is located in Henan province, China.
