Is Northern Shaolin kung fu right for me?
do mma instead it will work you skinny. i weigh what you weigh but im 5'10 . and i lost almost 15lbs in 4 months (without ) changing my diet . eat alot of oatmeal in the morning and if you are in your 30's ask the doc about hgh(human growth hormone) the stuff works great . at my most active i went from 230lbs down to 175. and grew antlers.
Reply:Northern Shaolin is more about kicking than punching. As you know that kicking requires more energy than punch. You have to run, jump, do alot of cardio. It helps you lose weight greatly!!! But you said you have asthma, i dont recommend you to take this kind of martial art. You better take Tai chi. It helps your mind, and body. A master of Tai chi does not use much energy but he can beat a bigger guy than him. It also helps your respiratory, and circulation system man!!!!!!! Try Tai Chi.
Reply:Well try reading some books about it then try going to a real school. Northern Shaolin kung fu can really help you with your weight problems and you can learn self-defense. Be careful with your asthma. Try it first, if you can't handle it then don't force yourself. Remember that you have a light asthma and you don't want it to get worse.
Reply:I think a treadmill is right for you , for now anyway. You are huge! ...seriously not even trying to be funny but being that over weight can be bad for your health! Get on a diet and a good exercise plan , nothing too extreme like shaolin kung fu , stick to putting the bag of Cheetos downs for now , and getting off the damn coach.

Read this site , learn all its info , and DO IT!

Reply:I've never trained in the Northern Shaolin style myself, yet I'm told it can be a very demanding style.

On the other hand, I've repeatedly heard TaiChi is very good for stress, asthma, and other health related issues.

They both will get you to better health, but; while the Northern Shaolin will probably give you better cardio, TaiChi is likely to be a less strenuous way to build your strength.
Reply:Northern Kung Fu styles tend to have higher kicks and more acrobatics because Northern Chinese people tended to be a bit taller than Southern so I don't think you're barking up the right alley.

Little by little you'll shed weight as you work out, but to feel like you're making progress and to study a truly effective art based on your body type, I suggest Wing Chun.

there are no acrobatic moves and it's all about effeciency, sense of touch and mobility.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Northern Shaolin not sound like best style for you, have high kicks, require great balance for crane stance, it for taller and longer legs men. Southern Shaolin styles best for short people. My lover took Northern shaolin, he is 185 cm tall weigh 165kg, I think that 6'-1", 363 pound, all muscle, bench press 300kg, deadlift 325kg, squat 350kg, have great balance and cordination.
Reply:i was there last year, and i'd say dont worry about your asthma or your weight. the monks are profesional trainers(no one will embarrass you or make you do anything you cant do). And their training becomes intense, it isn't intense right off your first day there, you start out slowly. So i suggest you just go and not worry about anything. Good luck!!
Reply:I've studied a little bit of Northern Shaolin and yes, it does have intense training.

It's not impossible, but it's definetly more difficult than karate.

As for it not being a martial art for short people, well, I'm 4ft 10in and the kicks aren't that difficult..the basic kicks are very similar to karate techniques .

And although the crane stance is difficult at first, with enough work, you quickly get used to it.

Also, it might actually HELP you with your asthma..I have Cystic Fibrosis and martial arts has definetly helped my lungs remain strong.

Give Northern Shaolin a try--if you don't end up liking it, there's other martial arts to check out.
Reply:Well myself I will soon be starting shaolin, but I hae done martial arts before, Shaolin is a very intense martial art also. Maybe you should go to one of the classes and if it looks too intense then you should do tai chi chuan first so you have experience as tai chi CHUAN is a martial art
Reply:Hey Aaron,

I'm not to sure if you are expecting to lose heaps of weight strictly from the training alone, because its also a lot to do with diet as well.

The training will definitely help though, the thing I like about the Chinese training is the circular style, I found it a lot easier on my body than the harder styled Kempo training I had been doing for years and what I mean by that is its more flowing.

I also believe that the Tai Chi will help with your asthma actually any physical exertion that requires you to use your lungs will slowly be beneficial.

And Mind Set, have you got the right attitude to carry you passed the "I don't like this its easier to sit on the couch and watch TV" attitude, I'm not saying that you have, just a little determination goes along way.

All the best.

Im 103kg or 227.1 Pounds and 5'11.

It doesnt hold me back!!!
