Or you can look up USSD, go to their webpage and enter Rochester, NY to find a local dojo. They teach Shaolin Kempo though, not exactly Shaolin Kung Fu, but most dojo's don't actually teach true Shaolin style anyway. USSD has the belssings and guidance of the Shaolin headmaster and uses his core teachings as their core program.
Reply:shaolin kung fu is a highly suspect art.

Suspect for having bs teachers and teaching methods.

Much has become performance and schools do not train with resistance. This is a problem in Chinese Martial Arts, moreso with shaolin.

I would suggest you find another style, ESPECIALLY in a place like rochester which is not a huge area and you don't have the acess to many schools like you do in NYC.

The odds of finding a chinese martial arts teacher of any chinese martial art that trains realistically and with resistance (as opposed to a compliant partner who just "follows" to make his teacher or the technique look good) is not very high in such an area.

It isn't easy to find in NYC what makes you think it would be in rochester.

I would look for another art, or at least another CMA. Odds of you finding a real shaolin school that will actually train you to fight and do it properly in the U.S. is slim.
Reply:Lucky you - you are positively spoilt for choice!

Try these sites and good luck!
Reply:Type in Shaolin kung fu in your browser there are many great school in NY. If you go to my website and look through the links I'm sure you will get what you are looking for.

Where is the Shaolin Temple in China and is it worth visiting?

I'm planning on going to China this year. Should I include a stop at the Shaolin Temple as part of my tour?

Where is the Shaolin Temple in China and is it worth visiting?
I've been to Shaoling Temple twice now. In fact I live about 3-4 hours away. It's a great place to see, and it is a lot more then a one attraction sight. There are temples, museums, a pagoda forest, training halls, a theatre where you watch demonstrations, and three different mountains that you can either climb or take the cable car, each with there own unique sights at the top. See the following link for more info:

If you are going to travel through this area of China I would suggest that you also visit the city of Luoyang which is just an hour or more away from Shaolin. Luoyang is home to the Longmen Grottoes which were started in 493AD. A really interesting place packed with culture. It's a bit to much to explain here, so just follow the link below for a good decription with pictures.

http://www.travelchinaguide.com/attracti...

Luoyang also has the White Horse Temple, which was the first Buddhist temple in all of China (first constructed in 67AD)

http://www.travelchinaguide.com/attracti...

Luoyang is a nice city with lots to see and do. Make sure you visit the antique market underneath the horse and chariot statue in the central square of dowtown. Since you only need a day trip to go to Shaolin, you can get a hotel in Luoyang, and take a tour bus from the main train station to Shaolin. They leave every half hour in the morning, and are around 30-50 Yuan (RMB) Or, you can hire a taxi for the day, so that you can take your time, and see things on your terms. I believe the Taxi cost about 300 Yuan (RMB) around 40 US$.

Hope this helps, and I hope you have a great time on your trip through China. I should also mention that there is a rail-line that goes straight from Luoyang to Xi'an if you are interested in going there to see the Terracotta Warriors (Perhaps the second most important thing to see in China, next to the great wall) You can find a reliable train schedule here:

Reply:ya you get to see all the monks working on their kung-fu
Reply:The Shaolin Monastery is located in the Songshan mountains in the province Henan. This is in the middle of china and on a mountain. This place is a single attraction place. There is not much to see besides mountains. But you can spend some spiritual moments in the monastery.

Is it worth going? Yes, if you have a lot of time. But it is not my prefer place to go. I would go visit yellow mountain before shaolin.

GL.
Reply:that would be so cool.

tell us more about china man, where else are you going.
Reply:it is located in Henan province, China.

you should go there and tour

On Mortal Kombat : Shaolin Monks ..how do impale Baraka ??

When playing Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks for the X box ..when you get up to Barka and have to impale him with the two swords ..how do you impale him ?? A box pops up with Raiden in it saying impale him now ...but I hit every damn button and can't seem to impale him with the swords and it's kinda pissing me off...

I can someone please help ?

thanks in advance.

On Mortal Kombat : Shaolin Monks ..how do impale Baraka ??
Okay, I went on a message board and someone asked the same question. The answer was: throw a sword at him. Use whatever the button for "pick up weapon" is, and that allows you to throw it at him (I think it's the black button, but I'm not sure). Then, after you throw the first sword, pick up the second and throw it at him, too. Then, you'll win.

Hope it works!

What is the shaolin workout?????

well i was at the book store and i found this book called shaolin workout its got some really kewl looking workouts, can anyone care to tell me more about it and can i really transform my body

What is the shaolin workout?????
Hey there Greg!! That book is useful for anyone who is interested in Chinese martial arts. The workout teaches the basics of Kung Fu, for example: stretches, stances, poses, punches, and kicks, presented in 28 lessons. The photos of Master Shi's demonstrations in each session are very useful for learning the lessons. Meditation is also an important part of Chinese martial arts, emphasized by Master Shi in the book. It is mainly for beginners and it may be used by experts as a reference book. But if you are looking for some advanced techniques, you will need to learn them from a good master in person...

Hapkido or Shaolin(Kicking style) or Judo?

I'm going back to martial arts but I have a few options, judo, hapkido and shaolin, which one should I do?

I want to know whether its just for looks or real combat, what advantages/disadvantages or characteristics(Like what its based on e.g. close combat, grab, parrying).

I'd appreciate any answers soon.

Hapkido or Shaolin(Kicking style) or Judo?
Hapkido is the most versatile of those 3, but in ALOT of schools, they train with non-resisting opponents. That is not good. In Judo, the opponents always resist, so that is the advantage that Judo have over Hapkido grappling. However, I would still take Hapkido for the versatility though. You can always take up Judo at a later time to make up for what Hapkido grappling lacks in. Now keep in mind, I am only talking about certain schools. By no means all Hapkido schools teach worthless grappling and throws. It's mainly the contemporary ones and unfortunately, they are more popular, so be careful when you're shopping around. The more traditional versions teach grappling and throws with resisting opponents and the throws, joint locks, etc are more deadly than Judo's (Considering the fact that Judo doesn't have any maiming techniques).

Another thing with contemporary Hapkido schools is that they train alot of high kicks, which is not practical in a real combat situation. You don't have to use them just because you train in them though, but the thing is, if you train in high kicks constantly it will become muscle memory, and when you get in a real fight, throwing high kicks will almost become 2nd nature. If the Hapkido school trains mid-level to low level kicks too, then I would use those instead.

All in all, I'd go for the traditional Hapkido schools, no better yet, COMBAT HAPKIDO instead, because it is alot more practical and also adds Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do fighting methods as well.

I really wouldn't choose Northern Shaolin to be honest, and that's for a good bit of reasons, mainly having to do with high kicks and flashiness....something that really can't serve you on the street (NOT ALL Northern Shaolin styles, but most though).

All in all, it comes down to what you want and how you apply the techniques you learn in a practical fashion. You really can take up all 3 of those arts if you want to, not to learn techniques to add to your arsenal, but instead, you learn how to defend against those type of attacks by using the techniques you already know and making them better.
Reply:I don't know which style would be best for you but I've been looking into taking some Hapkido classes over here. It seems like a very interesting style.
Reply:Judo seems fun
Reply:I've been doing Hapkido for 10 yrs. It covers all phases of combat from striking, kicking joint lock sub mission, multiple attackers, grappling just to name a few. i think its advantage is it's versatility and ability to be adaptable to any given situation. Without having to go to 2 or 3 other schools to learn specific skills. I use it in law enforcement and I KNOW it WORKS in the real world.
Reply:I would begin with Judo
Reply:Judo is very good especially for grappling and take downs.

No real striking though.

Hapkido has great striking and some grappling. Some schools only concentrate on strikes though.

Shaolin kung fu, there are very few who actually teach shaolin kung fu, although many claim to. If it is an actual school decended from shaolin, it should be very effective.
Reply:First of i would have to say Hapkido due to the fact i am a BB in hapkido but i would first b4 choosing any check the schools out and ask if u can see their advance class from there study the teacher and the students do they look well trained, do they follow instructions properly, do they look sloppy or move swifly its easy to tell if the mess up alot. THe advance class is the heart of the MA studio so observe and see if they seem up to standards. then check out a begginner course and now observe the instructor does he teach well...is he someone you would want to learn from so yeah do those then make your decision not just on the basis of the art. Any dojo can give out belts so watch out for that.

Can I learn The Northern Shaolin Form[s] online without having to pay?

I want to learn the Shaolin Forms Koy Moon, Leng Lo, Jou Mah, Chumn Sam, Mo I, Tun Da, Moi Fah, Bot Bo, Lien Wan, and Sik Fot online but I do not wanna pay for it(well of course not lol). Doas anybody know any websites that may describe or show pictures of the movements or even slow movements on video? I would really appreciate it because I really wanna learn these forms. What ive been doing is looking into many different arts like Muay Thai, BJJ, Shaolin Gong Fu and more. And this is will be a big part of my training im starting. : )

Can I learn The Northern Shaolin Form[s] online without having to pay?
the people that say you cant learn from books or online r full of **** you can totaly learn by yourself off books and stuff in saying that tho i do go to a club but i still do think you can learn from pictures and movies etc if u want after all at class dont we just learn from eatching others think about it

that only really goes for striking blocks and things like that doesnt work for judo or grappling where u need other people if that makes sense
Reply:How will you learn if not from a qualified instructor?
Reply:Jeez, i hope you get your head on straight, go to a qualified instructor. Learning all that by book, will do nothing for you, im not ranting at you, just trying to show you thats may not be a bright idea. To the other thing about not paying-isnt that stealing.

Is Northern Shaolin kung fu right for me?

Is it hard? I am obese i am 5'5" and 220 i went to see a nutritionist about a month ago and lost 5 lb since. Does northern shaolin go through intense training? I also have asthma but very light

Is Northern Shaolin kung fu right for me?
do mma instead it will work you skinny. i weigh what you weigh but im 5'10 . and i lost almost 15lbs in 4 months (without ) changing my diet . eat alot of oatmeal in the morning and if you are in your 30's ask the doc about hgh(human growth hormone) the stuff works great . at my most active i went from 230lbs down to 175. and grew antlers.
Reply:Northern Shaolin is more about kicking than punching. As you know that kicking requires more energy than punch. You have to run, jump, do alot of cardio. It helps you lose weight greatly!!! But you said you have asthma, i dont recommend you to take this kind of martial art. You better take Tai chi. It helps your mind, and body. A master of Tai chi does not use much energy but he can beat a bigger guy than him. It also helps your respiratory, and circulation system man!!!!!!! Try Tai Chi.
Reply:Well try reading some books about it then try going to a real school. Northern Shaolin kung fu can really help you with your weight problems and you can learn self-defense. Be careful with your asthma. Try it first, if you can't handle it then don't force yourself. Remember that you have a light asthma and you don't want it to get worse.
Reply:I think a treadmill is right for you , for now anyway. You are huge! ...seriously not even trying to be funny but being that over weight can be bad for your health! Get on a diet and a good exercise plan , nothing too extreme like shaolin kung fu , stick to putting the bag of Cheetos downs for now , and getting off the damn coach.

Read this site , learn all its info , and DO IT!

http://spartafit.com/
Reply:I've never trained in the Northern Shaolin style myself, yet I'm told it can be a very demanding style.

On the other hand, I've repeatedly heard TaiChi is very good for stress, asthma, and other health related issues.

They both will get you to better health, but; while the Northern Shaolin will probably give you better cardio, TaiChi is likely to be a less strenuous way to build your strength.
Reply:Northern Kung Fu styles tend to have higher kicks and more acrobatics because Northern Chinese people tended to be a bit taller than Southern so I don't think you're barking up the right alley.

Little by little you'll shed weight as you work out, but to feel like you're making progress and to study a truly effective art based on your body type, I suggest Wing Chun.

there are no acrobatic moves and it's all about effeciency, sense of touch and mobility.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Northern Shaolin not sound like best style for you, have high kicks, require great balance for crane stance, it for taller and longer legs men. Southern Shaolin styles best for short people. My lover took Northern shaolin, he is 185 cm tall weigh 165kg, I think that 6'-1", 363 pound, all muscle, bench press 300kg, deadlift 325kg, squat 350kg, have great balance and cordination.
Reply:i was there last year, and i'd say dont worry about your asthma or your weight. the monks are profesional trainers(no one will embarrass you or make you do anything you cant do). And their training becomes intense, it isn't intense right off your first day there, you start out slowly. So i suggest you just go and not worry about anything. Good luck!!
Reply:I've studied a little bit of Northern Shaolin and yes, it does have intense training.

It's not impossible, but it's definetly more difficult than karate.

As for it not being a martial art for short people, well, I'm 4ft 10in and the kicks aren't that difficult..the basic kicks are very similar to karate techniques .

And although the crane stance is difficult at first, with enough work, you quickly get used to it.

Also, it might actually HELP you with your asthma..I have Cystic Fibrosis and martial arts has definetly helped my lungs remain strong.

Give Northern Shaolin a try--if you don't end up liking it, there's other martial arts to check out.
Reply:Well myself I will soon be starting shaolin, but I hae done martial arts before, Shaolin is a very intense martial art also. Maybe you should go to one of the classes and if it looks too intense then you should do tai chi chuan first so you have experience as tai chi CHUAN is a martial art
Reply:Hey Aaron,

I'm not to sure if you are expecting to lose heaps of weight strictly from the training alone, because its also a lot to do with diet as well.

The training will definitely help though, the thing I like about the Chinese training is the circular style, I found it a lot easier on my body than the harder styled Kempo training I had been doing for years and what I mean by that is its more flowing.

I also believe that the Tai Chi will help with your asthma actually any physical exertion that requires you to use your lungs will slowly be beneficial.

And Mind Set, have you got the right attitude to carry you passed the "I don't like this its easier to sit on the couch and watch TV" attitude, I'm not saying that you have, just a little determination goes along way.

All the best.

Im 103kg or 227.1 Pounds and 5'11.

It doesnt hold me back!!!

Mortal kombat shaolin monks?

I'm pretty new on mortal kombat shaolin monks, the last time a played mortal kombat was like 5 years ago and i remember that scorpio, sub zero and every one had its own powers, do you know how is in this version of mortal kombat, if is the same how can i know the powers of each one (FOR PS2)

Mortal kombat shaolin monks?
Shaolin Monks is a bit different from the others as it is more rpg'ish. Each character still has their own fighting styles and I would suggest gamefaqs.com as a great place to find info on each character and their special abilities. This game is different also in the fact that in order to 100% complete the game and get every hidden item...you have to play through it in 2 player because certain things require 2 people to unlock.
Reply:wow you are just like me bub!;D

I discovered MK all over again by getting MKSM!

Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kitana, Baraka, Reptile, Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Johnny Cage as playable characters and they basically get all of their original powers and some added new ones but there is a secret area in the Living Forset that you can access to complete like five tasks for Smoke (if you can remember him) and after completing all five, you WILL unlock the opportunity to play the original MK2! That WILL help you remember a whole lot of MK like it did me!!! Have fun and i hope this was some info to you!?:D
Reply:Yeah, I agree with these 2 guys. It is RPG'ish and it definitely lets you relive the classic moments only in 3D! You get to see all the levels from Mortal Kombat 1 and 2. After all that's the time setting for the story of MKSM. And it has a pretty interesting story line as you go through the levels starting off in MK 1's stages and eventually making your way to MK2 where you fight yours truly...

Physics with Shaolin Soccer!?

Well, i have to do a project where i explain the physics involved with the movie Shaolin Soccer. I need to know some math equations that i could use to show that you can not jump 20 feet into the air, that you can not head butt a ball 20 feet into a goal and knock the goalie over, and that you can not just stand and then kick someone into the air.

Physics with Shaolin Soccer!?
shaolin soccer is awesome!

an equation... since the first guy is stationary in the air and the goalie is stationary (yes this would only apply if the first guy is in the air and the goalie takes off on impact, touching the floor screws it up)

M1*V1 + M2*V2 = 0

where M1 and M2 are the masses of the players, and V1%26amp;2 are the velocity of the 2 players. if one flys back, the other move in the opposite direction to conserve the momentum (or spin round to make angular momentum). the ball just transfers the momentum (with complete efficiency in this model). since they are about the same weight v1~v2

you could probably demonstrate it quite well with trucks or something...

if he headed the ball he'd probably do himself a mischief!

when the guy calls his family to tell them he loves them, before he tries to save a penalty is classic :D
Reply:With enough chi you can do those things. I have seen it in person.
Reply:Nothing in Physics would tell you that you cannot do the aforementioned things. Theoretically, all are quite possible.
Reply:The reason you cannot do those things is becuase of the theories of force and momentum. Use the newtain laws for force to explain why you cant do that. The equation is F=m*a which is force equals mass times acceleration. The reason that you cant knock a person over with a soccer ball is because it doesnt have a substantial amount of mass and that no matter how much force you put into the soccer you wont knock a person over a just 20 feet acceleration formula is a= V/t which is the change in velocity over time.So the father it is the faster the acceleration, for example if I fire a soccer ball 100 yards away from a person from a cannon I'll definetly knock that person down because of the force increase so the momentum increases. The momentum formula is P=F*d which is momentum equals force times distance so that's why it couldn't knock anyone over because it could'nt have generated enough force and momentum to knock anyone down from just 20 feet from a human kick, the kick doesn't even generate a enough force to gain enough force to knock a person down.

Now for the 20 foot jump in the air, have you ever heard the gravitational constant be 9.81 m/s^2.It is the average cal. constant for gravity on Earth. There is no way a human can jump that high because Fg=G(m1*m2)/r^2 this means the force of gravity equals the universal gravitional constant (which 6.663*10^-11) times the mass of the object times the mass of the planetary object(the mass of Earth is 5.874*10^8)divided by the center of distance squared. The person that's trying to jump that high must have a stronger force upward than the force of gravity downward. To achieve this the person would have to had lived on a planet aleast three times the gravity of Earth(let's say 1g=9.81N).Multiply that by three and they'll be able to jump 20 feet in the air,but since that's highly improbable that's impossible.

So I answer all you're.Good luck with you're project

Chuck Liddel vs The Strongest Shaolin Fighter?

In a no rules fight, who do you think would win in a fight between Chuck Liddel and the best heavyweight, or light-heavyweight Shaolin monk. Shaolin Kung Fu in America is a joke, but the younger practitioners in the monasteries of China that actually spar, are pretty hardcore.

Im going with Chuck Liddel.

Chuck Liddel vs The Strongest Shaolin Fighter?
If the monk had a valid self-defense reason to fight Liddel, not just fighting for the sake of fighting, Liddel would be dead in less time than the shortest UFC knockout.

Why you guys bow down to MMA and UFC and BJJ is funny. Herd mentality I suppose. They're great in these kind of tournaments for sport.
Reply:I deleted my answer by mistake. But there is an illuminating article from former Shaolin monk as to why Liddle will be killed in almost an instant if he fought a proper Shaolin Monk who were trained in traditional Kung Fu.

Reply:I'll stick with Chuck, lol. Although the monks may spar, Liddell fights for a living and has a far more well-rounded game. Shaolin monks spar with...shaolin monks. Liddel (and all sports fighters) fights against many other types of arts and fighters, and has a much better chance to adapt in a fight than someone who fights people who are practicing the exact same style.
Reply:It is definetly lidell. These monks are weak in their structure and i dont think they will do the same as shown in films.
Reply:I pick the monk. The true monks in China do crazy hardcore training not even UFC fighters do.
Reply:CHUCK LIDDEL
Reply:Everyone can do hardcore training in any possible way. However in end human will pass out without oxygen reaching their brain, skeleton will break, brain will rattle against skull, joints cant' be bent wrong way without discloating, and the list goes on.

Chuck train to do all those. Shaolin train to do stunt and form. So my moneys is definitely on Chuck.

Edit: Oh and don't forget he has thumbed people in eye.
Reply:You guys are ridiculous. You are comparing apples to oranges and its the incorrect way to look at things. Obviously Liddell is one of the best fighters in the world. But if you are on the street fighting for your life all the rules go out the window. No one can withstand a finger to the eye or kick in the nuts or someone pulling your hair, that **** hurts. I got poked in the eye before, trust me, you go down, and if the finger goes near the temple you lose all equilibium and just drop. The new UFC and Pride is made for television, there a great martial artist and fighters that would never step into a cage because these people train to do whatever it takes to survive in a fight. There are no rounds or time limits or rules when your fighting for your life. Chuck is beatable, I've seen it a few times. He's one of my favorite fighter too, but anyman is beatable. The UFC does'nt have anyone that can compete with him. He's not even a heavyweight, that's a whole new ballgame. A heavyweight who is excellent in Jui Jitsu and would be strong enough to take the Iceman to the ground could definately tap him out.

How do shaolin monks protect their balls?

i saw a few videos on utube of shaolin monks that were immune to getting uppercuts to thier groin area,,is that a trick or something else? i heard thay put ther testicles inside their bodies but that wouldnt make them immune

How do shaolin monks protect their balls?
It's a trick, no one is immune to a groin kick, not even eunichs. The only way around it is to turn you hip as your opponent tries to strike you in the jewels to block the shot.
Reply:You are both idiots..... Report It

Reply:Actually there are people who supposedly developed the ability to place their balls inside their body to protect them. I am not sure if that would make them immune from damage or pain.

Is there shaolin kung fu near Rochester, New York?

I want to learn shaolin kung fu and I was wondering if there were any schools near Rochester, New York?

Is there shaolin kung fu near Rochester, New York?
USSD has schools in that area and they teach Shaolin Kempo. Their headmaster, Professor Matera was awarded 9th rank black belt by the Shaolin headmaster. Shaolin Kempo is a combination of Shaolin style and Japanese Karate and Jiujitsu. They teach the animal styles of Shaolin as th basis of the text, yet they use a streamlined approach morel ike Karate and use karate style gi's. Then they use some of the grappling and counter styles from Jiujitsu to make it more street friendly.
Reply:pretty sure there's a school or two in nyack. just type in kung fu nyack and you'll get something. good luck!
Reply:first off I know the area of rochester even though I live in the city.

There is not as many MA schools there like there are new york city and even in new york city I don't think there is a legit shaolin kung fu school.

I haven't seen any.

The problem with Chinese Martial Arts is that there are so many bad schools out there and so many sham teachers that teach you nothing but garbage and they train without resistance that it makes finding a legit one that much harder to find, even in a large city like new york. I'm convinced as a matter of fact that you won't find legitimate CMA outside of a large metropolitan area. I could be wrong, I'm sure there is one somewhere, but I'm doubtfull and chances are it is not your area.

Even among CMA Shaolin and tai chi are the frauds of the frauds, they are MUCH harder to find a good CMA (except san da which is chinese kickboxing, basically) school than other CMA's.

Go to the class, and if they don't train with resistance then walk away. if they tell you to build up your "chi" and talk about magic powers, etc. walk away.

It is much safer to gravitate towards arts that have more competitive outlets like Muai Thai, boxing, bjj, judo, san da, sambo that are much easier to find a legit school. If you don't know what you are looking for or at or able to tell a good school giving instruction and most importanlty teaching you how to apply it in a fight, then you could end up wasting your time and thinking you are learning when you aren't.

I myself take a CMA and have tested it (sparred) against people outside my school and done well, That is why I'm harder on CMA than people who don't take it. And I know how much crap there is floating around even from my short time training in it). So I'm not just out to crap on shaolin or chinese martial arts in general, there are many that are, but I don't want to see someone make a mistake and support a school that doesn't deserve to be teaching in the first place.

Where can I learn Northern Shaolin Kung Fu around L.A. / South-Bay Area?

I started learning Northern Shaolin Kung Fu at UC Irvine. But I will graduate soon. I am wondering where I can continue to learn Shaolin Kung Fu around L.A or in the Manhattan Beach / Redondo Beach / Torrance area.

Where can I learn Northern Shaolin Kung Fu around L.A. / South-Bay Area?
yahoo! local or yellowpages. if you can't find any dojos or places to study, you can use books or videos from your public library, bookstore, etc. i know this is not the best way, but if you really want to learn it and got no other choice, uses books.

Mortal Kombat Shaolin monks?

i've just started playing shaolin monks, but i dont know how to save. can somebody help me out please? it says it autosaves but when i tried to load my profile it wasnt there. or is there save spots?

Mortal Kombat Shaolin monks?
Find the statues wearing that hold trays of some sort. they often appear every now and then in the game on different levels. When you find one press the Throw button. The statue should be glowing.

See, I don't know which game console you have MKSM for but it should be either the throw button or the block button, I am pretty sure.
Reply:First, you should check your memory availability. If you memory is full, delete some things. After you do that and the autosave doesnt work, try looking for some saving spot in the game. i have play shaolin monks before and i think there is some spots where you can manually save the game yourself.

Reply:Eat bland food, dont talk, and constantly excercise and stretch till you drop each day for 20 years. You will then be ready for the ultimate challenge, your mental training.
Reply:Without being insulting, not possible. One= Americans don't have the discipline to withstand the shoalin training longterm.

Two= the fact that you asked this question says that you do not want to do what is necessary... ie take orders from a teacher etc. Again the American mentality.

Has a fully practicing Shaolin monk ever died of cancer.?

The reason i ask this question is that all fully practicing Shaolin Monks seem to be in good health even up until 80s 90s which i beleive is because of their diet and lifestyle, when i say fully practicing Shaolin Monk i mean one that has been practicing from an early age up until death in the monesty, I know this is a pretty random question and dont really expect a yes or no answer but am interested in what people think as I believe western culture can still learn a lot from these people.

Has a fully practicing Shaolin monk ever died of cancer.?
Good question, and it may be a good topic for a survey or research.

History has shown how Tai Chi Chuan gained popular support,

surpassing all other forms of combat and health exercises. It was

in the past and still today regarded as the chief preventer of chronic illnesses, including cancer, in China.

Hey im doin shaolin fer now but i wouldnt mind doin shou shu kung fu fer a bit. Anyone know if its just as beneficial as shaolin kung fu?

Shou shu v.s shaolin kung fu?
Hard to say. What you'd have to do is get each of the teachers to enter a UFC tournament and show everyone how deadly they really are but I bet the excuses come thick and fast if you ever suggest that.
Reply:Yeah. kung fu is for dreamers who believe martial arts movies are all real.
Reply:I don't think it is. Shaolin kung fu has a great focus on the health benefits as well as the combat component.

Don't worry. Keeping at one art and getting good at it is much more beneficial than switching between arts.

Keep at the kung fu!

And you may want to seek out a dictionary for your spelling as well.

Shaolin Temple training in China?

I was browsing the internet on some information on Shaolin temples in China and came across this site and many other ones like it.

http://www.chinashaolins.com/index.htm

Is it really worth the time to go to these temples to further learn Kung Fu? I'm not interested in WuShu or any form of martial arts that is for show or display. I've read online as well from forums that people found these temples to be "fake". Some even stated that the master of the temple was just there for show and they only teach WuShu mixed with Kung Fu. For the amount of money required to go to these places and live their for five years or so, is it really the real deal and worth the years and money?

I've spent the last seven years training in combat alone through books, but not a specific art, such as Gung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, ect... I can always just forget about going to a temple and keep doing what I have been doing for the last seven years studying all types of martial arts, or go to a temple to train.

Shaolin Temple training in China?
Why go to China?

There are qualified Shaolin trained monks from China who have defected to the US and and opened their own Temples.

http://www.usashaolintemple.org/

Sifu Shi Yan MING defected to the U.S. in 1992 and teaches authentic Shaolin Temple (Buddhist) kung fu and religion.

But don't forget the Taoists of Wudang Mountain:

http://www.damo-qigong.net/temple/wudang...

The Taoist priests of Wudang Mountain also give instructions and it is reputed that Taoist kung fu is slightly better than Shaolin kung fu.
Reply:Like mac 1hull said why go to China. There is in fact a number of qualified true Shaolin instructors in the US at least 2 here in NYC. Now if your heart is set on going to China you really have to be care full and do real research besides there is only to my knowledge 1 real Shaolin temple in China. Now as far as books go they can only show you but so much and a lot of what you need to learn for Martial Arts can only be learned from a qualified instructor weather its TaeKwon-Do Karate or Kung Fu if you are just interested in learning Martial Arts in general find a qualified instructor in your area if you want to try to find a qualified Shaolin instructor in your area try to contact the National Assoc. of Professional Martial Artist at NAPMA.com to see if they can help you find what you want.

Good luck.
Reply:usashaolintemple.org Shi yan Ming runs this school and is building a temple where you can live and train at. If you go to china, its very hard to be accepted into the "true" shaolin temple. Most westerns get sent to the "wushu" school, and from what i see........thats not what your looking for. Iam a shaolin practicioner myself......and I agree with you....i would love to train with the true fighting monks.

are all those pics. of shaolin monks jumping real, can you actually jump over like 2.5 feet. without training your whole life.

Shaolin monks jump height, and other?
Yes, its done with momentum. The off-side leg is used as a boost, much like diving board style. Personally, I've cleared 8 feet with ease. Martial Arts is quite amazing, even to those who can.

Shaolin Kung Fu?

Hi I want to hear from only people who have trained in Shaolin Kung Fu please. I am currently in this and am glade I am . I notice that I am in a spiritual journey now. I have trained in the martial arts for years in various arts but this is the first time I have fealt this. Please tell me what this is and I would appreciate any helpful insight on this path to enlightenment.

Shaolin Kung Fu?
Please do not misunderstand me when I say this. I do not think it was the art or style so much that has done this for you as much as it has been who the teacher is. A great teacher makes all the differance in the world in whether you learn properly or not, and if you like it or not.

Sounds to me like you found a home and are happy and thats the feeling you have. A sense of belonging.

Good Luck
Reply:I don't agree with this because chinese kung fu including Shaolin Kung Fu follows a system. A system is just like a formula so if you following the formular you can achieve a certain thing. In my opinion it's the art that help you achieve. Report It

Reply:In chinese kung fu including Shaolin Kung Fu you don't really need a teacher. One just learn from there own experience with the system or art. Report It

Reply:often it is called "spirtitual infusion".

meaning someone has chosen to add spirituality and religion to a martial art.

I would ask yourself this question:

"can I fight?".

if the answer is "no" or "I don't know" then what good is it?

Arts that tend to offer "spiritual enlightenment" share more in common with Heaven's Gate, Scientology, David Khoresh, the Moonies, Hare Krishnas and the republican national party (zing!) than they do legitimate martial arts that teach you to fight.

people offer this to those looking for it so they swallow thier line that they are feeding them.

be careful more than usual.
Reply:Chuck Liddell could respond to this as he studies Kempo which is Shaolin Kung Fu. As for spiritual benefit, Religions have existed due to they bring an uplift to the mental well being of the person. It is not so much the reality of the religion as it is the reality of the mental benefit.

A great example is the concept of the Acid pool ,

At Shaolin they had a pool of water disguised as a pool of cleaning acid, and placed a board across the pool lengthwise.

Then the Abbotts had the students receive false info the pool was indeed Acid. During the course of training one day the Abbotts had the students walk the board. Almost all fell due to fear of the Acid, now the catch is the board they fell from was one exactly the same size used each day to cross the local stream. With Ease.

Their Mental state was not one of belief in themselves was the lesson, self discovery. Or when an MMA fighter is in a clinch and getting wasted, but that inner person comes alive due to his belief in him ( her ) self. This is the start of the Spiritual Journey that is a building block in the Way.

This benefit is exactly why Traditional Arts can and do help troubled kids, the handicapped and many more needing a spiritual uplifting to benefit their life. This is one that I see as the Best benefit of training, you live longer and better.
Reply:Perhaps you are getting older and wiser.
Reply:The Shaolin Kung Fu carries the traditions and training of the illustrious Shaolin Temple in Henan, China. Shaolin Kung fu teaches Ch'an Philosophy through the core Shaolin disciplines of martial arts or action meditation: Kung Fu ( Gong fu ), Tai Chi ( Tai Ji ), Chi Kung ( Qi Gong ). As the birthplace of all martial arts, Shaolin encompasses every style. Kung Fu is the most aerobic of the arts offered at the USA Shaolin Temple. There is no belt system but there is testing and students are awarded certificates. Students learn stretching, stances, kicks, jumps, movements, and empty hand and weapons forms. "Heart to Heart" and "Mind to Mind" is the essence of Shaolin Ch'an Philosophy -- and this system of training spans the differences between language and culture as a direct form of growth and understanding. Students find many paths to get to the Temple, while some students seek to build better health and create a feeling of well-being, others may train for self-defense or flexibility, but there is a singular concept behind Shaolin training: martial arts and Chan Philosophy are one and the same. Many people who have heard Shaolin Kung Fu are eager to learn how to punch through a 5 inches thick concrete wall and how to walk on the surface of a large river or lake. Let me assure you, those are not possible. Those techniques have been long lost. Even if those techniques still exist, it would take decades of training as full-time Kung Fu student to reach mastery. For your children: Shaolin Kung Fu can increase your child's confident, courage, strength, and most importantly your child's body flex. Children can also learn traditional discipline and ethic principles, and children will be capable of defending themselves when need. For teenagers: Allow teenagers to exercise more effectively (as oppose to ineffective weight training or waste of money and time at "24 Hours fitness"). Kung Fu helps teenagers to focus on maintaining body balance and quick thinking. You can choose to either practice hard-core techniques or soft techniques, there is no risk of sustaining serious exercise injury at all. Not only will you learn Kung Fu, you will also train in body fitness. For adult: Practice Kung Fu several times a week can help you relieve stresses you sustain in your everyday live, and it can also helps reduce tensions in dangerous and stressful jobs. Kung Fu is a martial art for training both body and mind. For elders: Kung Fu can help increase the prevention of disease and strengthen bones and muscles. Elderly can defend themselves against powerful and stronger foes using Tai Chi (a branch of Wu Dang Kung Fu). .Tai Chi allow elders to reflect enemy strength back to the enemy and requires little strength from users. Perfect for elders who want to exercise and learn self-defense at same time.

What is an shaolin moonk? If you have the oportunity to go ther will you go?
shaolin monks are buddihst monks. if i had a chance to study with them i would. they live a very austere simple life. they rise early study/work/pray very hard and exist on a very simple diet. they have none of the material things we hold so dearly to, they are seperated from thier families at 3 years old and sent to live in the temples. i was lucky enough to see the tibetan monks that provided the music for seven years in tibet. it's truly awe inspiring how completely they dedicate their lives to their beliefs.
Reply:Is a shaolin monk like a chimpanzee?
Reply:I think that it would be an amazing thing to be taught martial arts by a shaolin monk as their style of fighting seems to be a lot more effective than many of the other types. My husband did kung fu for a number of years and could still defend himself if he had to. He did another form for a few months but the people running it found him frustrating as kung fu moves in close to the opponent where the other style you were expected to stay apart from them. My husband would constantly move in and have the opponent on the ground before they knew what was happening. He lost interest quickly so stopped going. Unfortunately the kung fu school closed down so he couldnt keep it up.

Shaolin fist conditioning?

Has anyone heard of this fist conditioning method, basically you stick 2000 sheets of paper (or a phonebook) on a concrete wall and just hit it a lot with your fists.

It was on a documentary about the Shaolin temple with Jet Li (no not the movie).

Anyone know anything about this, side effects, good things?

Shaolin fist conditioning?
it's possible to hurt your wrists that way, even do permanent damage to them.

If you want to have powerfull fists focus on your body movement,

the correct way to throw a punch is to create a spiral motion from your heel to your waist, then to your chest%26gt;your shoulder%26gt;and finally your fist.

Practice hitting air first then with a punching bag.
Reply:If you do knuckle push ups you will get the same results. Standard conditioning in karate.
Reply:not to be rude....but dont listen to the first guy haha. It can't mess up your fists unless you don't have punch form. Even id you dont....wear wrist wraps. Punch it until you knuckles bleed or bruise or what ever. The goal is to build up the bone, flatten all knuckles and hard callises(sp)sorry haha i cant spell!...try doing this to a punching bag or wood or I use a brick wall...SOFTLY ON THE BRICK WALL! that is important

Shaolin monks?

Has anybody seen these guys in action? The deadliest fighters on the plannet no doubht about that.I watched an old documentary called jet li's shaolin kung fu narrated by jet li.I was totaly amazed at what these monks can do.This one monk was uppercutting bricks like they were slices of bread.Another monk who was in his 80's could do a handstand against the wall with 1 finger.I couldnt beleive what i was seeing half the time.

Shaolin monks?
i have seen them in action,i live in beijing and twice a day 365 days of the year they give a performance, always packed and awesome.one man attaches a rope to his testicles and lifts a huge stone off the floor.members of the audience go and try to pick it up but you can clearly see how heavy it is.the monks train up in the mountains and take students in from age 4 up.often, the poorer parents abandon their kid at the monestry and the monks take them in and train them.the training is harsh and starts at 5am,and ends at 8pm,and thats every day of the year.anyone who thinks these guys are not for real is living in cuckoo land.the bare hand stuff is awesome but the weapons display just makes your jaw drop.

Tell me what you think of their Demo team, pretty good? The guy does some great Drunken style. But I admit in the cage against the likes of some , well... he's in trouble... unless there is weapons. But ya gotta admit, it is Cool... MMA has an edge in a fair fist fight. Simply due to it is the mixing of styles and the development of close quarter combat weaponless - with some limits agreed. But all the limits applied can easily be used by the fighters., like eye clawing gouging, groin shots, etc.So I still go with MMA as the leader in hand to hand skills.
Reply:People that say MMA guys would beat the hell out of the monks in a fight have some points. But here's what i think. First of all, Shaolin isn't what it used to be. Monks in the prime of the Shaolin temple where probably the most proficient fighters that have been around. They didn't fight in an octagon where certain strikes where banned; they fought against opponents who were determined to kill them. Monks today do not face the same challenges. But the monks of the past were the original ultimate fighters. They lived and died by their training. And their training would make mma training look like childsplay. Sure they didn't pump iron, but they had grueling training regimens that not only forged their bodies but minds as well. These guys were hard. and to put it into perspective further, most martial arts in the world, even those practiced by mma fighters, have some root in Shaolin. The shaolin put these arts to the test, and the only reason these arts are around today is because there was really something to them. Its why they where the best in the world. The world may never again be able to allow the right conditions to cultivate such great great martial artists and the mental/spiritual strength they attained through meeting the conditions that were before them.
Reply:yea shaolin monks were pretty much supermen. but as u can see it takes a WHOLE LOT of years to get to where they are. were talkin lifetime training. however i think mas oyama is more impressive. the guys hands were made of steel. his strength was just unreal (he wrestled bulls to the ground and then chopped their horn off). oyama, kimura, and bruce lee were pretty hard workers and if lee didnt die like that...who knows where he could be
Reply:there is no evidence of any fighting EVER occuring at any shaolin temple, no evidence of shaolin supermonks or whatever, and considering how ineffective the systems ascribed to them(though without any evidence) are I highly doubt they ever existed. as a matter of fact every art in china which has claimed a lineage from the shaolin temple has been proven to be either completely fraudulent or "sifu X said so but he's dead now, and I don't have any other proof" and in most of those cases it turned out 'sifu X' never existed in the first place, no birth records, death records, burial place, etc. In america the few time the claims have been checked they turned out exactly the same.

the modern shaolin temple was set up by the chinese government to promote tourism and generate income, it was built in the 20th century, and its monks are no more inheiritors of a lost fighting art or heritage than is my dog. As for the 'historical' shoalin temple there is as much evidence for that as there is for camelot, actually evidence points to the legend of the shaolin temple being created by the chinese government as a way of creating their own camelot to create a sense of national pride when pride was very low during the worst years of socialist rule.

I am fully aware that most of you will be very upset with this, that it will be a big blow to your little fantasy world, tough, I live in reality you should join me, its really not all that boring here. but of course you don't want to hear that and will ignore me, and will blast me with rants and thumbs down and cite wiki articles(which all semi intelligent people know is a terrible source of information and should never be trusted) 'proving' me wrong. oh well continue your delusions, you all obviously know better than the historians
Reply:Anyone who goes on about the Shaolin not being the kind of fighter they used to be is missing the point.

If you knew the history of the Shaolin Monasteries you`d know why they created their fighting styles and why their style is the way it is now.

The most amazing thing about the Shaolin is this - they take anyone at any age ,you just need to show commitment to their way of life.
Reply:They don't seem to be doing any fighting. Especially when they could be making alot of money. It's not like they're not greedy! Derren Brown could probably dupilicate there stunts but you don't see them in UFC either!
Reply:dude i wish shaolin monks where as bad *** as u say , because that would be cool , and it would go buy all the movies and stories we see in hollywood , but the truth is rampage jackson and fedor can go over there and make little girls out of all of them.. there is no chi , being one with nature and all that about fighting in real life , and the nicer more mature person dosent always win. the real deadliest fighters on earth are the ones that train at a mma gym , take protien shakes , xyience , and know submissions , and street fight for a living.

Shaolin monk and Navy Seal?

I'm wondering whether a Shaolin monk can easily pass al Navy Seal's physical trainings.

1) Eat %26amp; sleep (very little)

2) Train

%26amp;

3) Meditate.

Reply:That's a good question. I think they wouldn't do it easily, but they could do it. Not even 100% of Navy Seals pass the tests completely.

I'm not sure how much they run or swim, that might hurt them. But the mental aspect should give them an edge, they are accustomed to hardship.

I would bet if the monk was instructed by his master to enter SEAL training he would not quit but I don't know if he would perform the tasks at the required levels.
Reply:It is possible, many of the conditioning techniques they use, I would believe are not all that dissimilar to SEAL training.

Shaolin-Do; any comments?

Just wondering if anyone had an comments or opinions of Shaolin-Do. The history intrests me (a chinese martial art that has a good reason for japanese tradition), but it seems to be heavily critisized. Any thoughts or opinions about the style I wanna know. Might be joining a school soon and want to know everything I can.

Shaolin-Do; any comments?
I can only go on what I have heard. I have heard it is cult like. It has created various styles and forms claiming they are older. The school usesd both Japanese and Chinese components I guess which is odd by itself. It used to be on the Kung Fu forumn if you brought up Shaolin do you got a lot of responses. Ask there. Bullshido also likes to say things about the art. Check it out

Personally, I wouldn't do that... better of with MMA, boxing, kick boxing, American Kenpo Karate, bjj, etc.
Reply:There is a lot of BS surrounding the art, I don't have any personal experience, but I've not really heard anything good about it.

IMO when a art can't even figure out if it is Chinese or Japanese something has gone wrong.

Shaolin - Chinese

Shaolin Kung Fu + Akido...?
What's your question.... ?

High kicks take a fraction of a second longer than high kicks?

Aikido and randori can potentially help you with multiple attackers? but to do so is very hard?
Reply:There is no shaolin kung fu and aikido isn't for fighting
Reply:whats r. lee talking about??
Reply:"Aikido isn't for fighting."

Tell that to my female cousin who beat up 2 guys who tried to attack her with broken bottles using aikido.
Reply:R. Lee is right, Aikido isn't for fighting. It's for defending, there's a big difference between fighting and self defense. I've studied Aikido and it has always bothered me back when I was still a beginner that whenever a friend asks me to spar with him, I couldn't initiate any offense and kick his butt ala Steven Seagal, it was only much later when I finally understood the whole Philosophy of Aikido that I was able to differentiate fighting from self defense. Fighting involves two people who want to hurt the other and aggressively attack one another in a contest of who gets to throw the most powerful attack that will take the other guy out. Self defense just involves someone who is trying to neutralize an unprovoked aggression and survive a violent attack. This is why most people keep saying that Aikido techniques looks fake like all star wrestling, because if the other guy doesn't attack, then the Aikido guy can't hurt the attacker. But that's the whole point, Aikido teaches avoidance of violence, so one should not eagerly seek to dish it out, just neutralize the attack with minimal or no violence as possible. As the saying goes, It takes two to tango.

As for Shaolin Kung Fu, last I looked, the Shaolin Wushu forms had a lot of high flying techniques, so I don't quite get what you mean by your first question.
Reply:Well most of the Northern Shaolin moves are high attacks.

But as for R.Lee's answer he got the Aikido part right but what the hell is he talking about when he says there is no Shaolin KF.
Reply:I agree that Aikido as a form of self defense. But when you under stand the art you would be able to initiate the conflict and apply veriest amounts of atemi. The Randori that is practiced is designed for the aikidoka to practice with an open mind. Not being allowed to set up for the next attack but to flow with the different opponents attacks.

Shaolin Discipline?

What is your opinion on the Shaolin discipline? Is there anyone out there that practices it?

Shaolin Discipline?
True Shaolin Discipline is rigorous and relentless....peaking your physical and mental abilities beyond your average concept of limitation! This art of arts is the grand daddy of most other forms of martial arts and is truly deep and profound with balance to the mind, body, %26amp; soul developed along with nature and your anilmalistic styles of blending man and the wild of the beasts!! Discipline comes from the constant trianing and complete focus to the inner self within us all!!Truly Amazing art ....wish I could study this in its raw form in China.......I would love to travel here to experience the majesty!!

Reply:I think Shaolin is a very interesting style. It is a root for many arts.

If I had a decent place to study it I would check it out.
Reply:I suppose that depends on what you mean by "Discipline." I study Shaolin Kung Fu, the Martial Art. I think it's great. But if you mean their religion, I think of it the same as any other Buddhist sect.
Reply:i am as well a student. I think it is an excelent art as it teaches you inner peace as well as great self defense.
Reply:It's a matter of personal prefernce which 'art' you choose to follow.

Many years ago, a variant of Shaolin Kung Fu sprang up in Japan and became known as Shorinji Kempo (Sho-rin being the Japanese pronunciation of Shaolin)

See the link below for info.
Reply:Well I've been doing it for 3 years and feel it was an excellent choice for me. Its a well rounded martial arts, focusing on defense, offense, blocking, and discipline. I'm at the dojo five days a week and never tire of it. Speak very highly of it.
Reply:I studied Northern Shaolin for 12 years under Sifu Wing Lam. One of the highlights of those years was a study tour to Shaolin in China to study under the Shaolin monks.

Its the greatest. I had studied Shotokan Karate and Aikido before I started studying Shaolin.

I had to stop because of a hip injury otherwise I would still be practicing it. Sifu Wing Lam is an outstanding instructor. The school format has changed but every minute with him gives you much deeper understanding of the art.

Was the Shaolin Monk, Ninja story true?

Recently I read on msn, that a Ninja got into a Shaolin Monk Temple in China, and beat a few of them up, is this true? The Chinese are supposedly quite annoyed about the story. Someone told me recently that the Shaolin Temples sleeping quarters they use wood that creaks, to prevent being caught unaware, any information on this? thanks

Was the Shaolin Monk, Ninja story true?
I read about that, too, and no, it's not true. It's just a case of someone on the internet making up a story that he finds amusing and insulting an entire country in the process.

I have never heard anything about the Shaolin Temple having purposefully creaky floors to prevent being caught unaware and have been unsuccessful in finding anything for or against this claim. However, I must point out that the Shaolin Temple and its monks have a unique place in both fact and legend. So many people have become fascinated with them that they have been incorporated into stories, movies, legends, etc., and this often blurs the lines between fantasy and reality.

In reality, the life of a Shaolin monk is far from glamorous. They wake early, they exercise, they meditate, they practice martial arts and then they do it all again. For them, it's all about internal discipline. There's no secret missions, no saving the world, and no earth-shattering secrets.
Reply:Yes there are such floors. They chirp when walked on. The floors are called Nightingale. There are a few Shogun castles that actually have them like Nijo Castle. Here is a pic or so. http://www.johnharveyphoto.com... Report It

Any websites, contact details for Southern Shaolin Temple, near Fuzhou, Fujian,China. I want to study marital arts, kungfu for a week or so. Do they have similar accommodation facilities and training for foreigners like the Northern Shaolin temple/school, in Henan, China has?

Does Southern Shaolin Temple/school, Putian, Fujian, China have accommodation for foreigners studying kongfu?
Not very sure about that.... these kind of people are very conservative..... also don't you think a week is like not enough??? I'm a taekwondo instructor and after 9 years I'm still in the learning process.... think about it carefully.....

Fake Shaolin Kung Fu?

theres a school nearby that teaches Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and some usage with swords, chain, spears, and staff. it is a chinese cultural center, located in san jose california... the teacher is chinese and speaks english a little... when i first went there..a yellow belt was playing some sort of soccer.. is this a fake shaolin school?

Fake Shaolin Kung Fu?
No, the Chinese use soccer to warm you up...They believe it is a good way to get you warm enough to stretch you legs. If he is from PR China, he may be teaching contemporary wushu. IF He or She is from Taiwan or Hong Kong, they may be teaching real Kung Fu
Reply:that's kinda weird try china town maybe
Reply:Do they have a website or anything we could look at? That would help. I don't know that much of shaolin kung fu, i did practice praying mantis kung fu under a fairly respected sifu, till i figured out he was stealing my money and not teaching me anything useful. Its really hard to say, i think if its a shaolin school and not in shaolin, dosent that make it automatically fake? It would still be fun to learn even it was fake.
Reply:When I took a karate. They suggested to jog. Playing soccer is a way to stay in shape. To be good in karate is to stay in shape.
Reply:This is the Shaolin school that i go to...its pretty fun and the ppl are really nice....heres the website.....its pretty new though been open for only 1 year...the monks there are actually from China... http://www.shaolinint.com/
Reply:YELLOW BELT in KUNG FU.Right there I would be asking questions never mind the soccer ..

In truly taditional kung fu there are 3 ranks student teacher master who is the founder of the system and usually long dead.

What is the name of the Shaolin temple in the Korean language?

The Shaolin temple (The temple where Bodhidharma first taught Ch'an Buddhism in China) is called Shaolínsì in Chinese and Shorinji in Japanese. What is this temple called in Korean?

Now before someone says Shaolin in Korean or any language is Shaolin, please remember that few things, 1) Shaolin in Japanese is not Shaolin. 2) The name "China" in Korean or Japanese is Not "China" 3) The name of the Indian Monk that taught Ch'an Buddhism (Bodhidharma) is pronounced P'ut'I Tamo or simply Tamo in Chinese; Daruma in Japanese and Boridalma in Korean. Thus it is not unreasonable to assume that the name of the temple itself is pronounced differently. Thank you!

What is the name of the Shaolin temple in the Korean language?
Sorimsa.

You know, The Shaolin Temple is written as 少林寺 in written Chinese. "少" here, is pronounced as "so" in Korean, "林" as "rim", and "寺" as "sa".
Reply:This is what I've come up with so far... If I can find more I'll edit

Shaolin = "young (or new) forest"

젊은 숲 = young forest

새로운 숲 = new forest

사원 = temple

젊은 숲 사원 = Young Forest Temple

Shaolin사원은

Excerpt below from http://www.shaolin.com/shaolin_history.a... :

- The temple had been built years before in the remains of a forest that had been cleared or burned down. At the time of the building of the temple, the emperor's gardeners had also planted new trees. Thus the temple was named "young (or new) forest", (Shaolin in Mandarin, Sil Lum in Cantonese).

Shaolin kung fu?

hi i'm a 16 year old male and i'm wanting to take shaolin kung fu but i am wondering if it is useful in a real fight, also is shaolin kung fu mostly about kicks punches or grapples? also would this be a good martial art for me to take? i'm looking for a martial art that teaches some self defense techniques.

Shaolin kung fu?
One of the main keys of studying martial arts is to find something you enjoy. I love my Chinese Internal arts class and find it relaxing to run through forms and moves. Most classes will let you take a couple of freebies to see what you think. Take some in your area and find the one that you find comfortable. If you hate your art you won't put your all into it. As for self defense any art will help.
Reply:Shaolin Kung Fu is kicking, punching, grapple, kicking in the groin, eye jabs and everything to defend against those attacks.

We also do sparring.

We also do forms for each belt grading.

You would certainly be able to have a advantage over a fight if you are a good fighter (that's if you stay calm and defend instead of going all out offense).

Shaolin Kung fu is one of the most powerful fighting styles. It is how well you apply the techniques used and most of the techniques are fairly efficient.
Reply:since when does the real shaolin kung fu start grading with belts ? when did they start sceeming for money ?

Look mate shaolin is ok mainly cause of the name people love it.

But REAL thugs and criminal attemps are a bit more advanced and changed in the last 300 yrs you should try something a bit more up to date that handles with real criminals.
Reply:boxing and judo are supposed to be good for self defence but i have never done them

i do karate and freestyle karate and out of the 2 only freestly karate even come close to self defence and only cause it uses muay thai/ boxing punches and round kicks
Reply:The Shaolin styles of kung fu are rather varied. Some are grappling (Chin Na) heavy, while some emphasize punches, others kicks. There are many many chuan (forms) in Shaolin too. This is why Shaolin is the springboard for most of the great martial arts today.
Reply:I do choy li fut kung fu which has shaolin roots. Pure shaolin doesn't grapple, but luckily most of the schools have adapted and added this in since the ground game is so important. A good thing about kung fu is that it is a style that has a wide variety and teaches you to use your whole body in a fight. If you happen to be smaller, kung fu is good because it teaches you to use your oppoents force against them. As far as real fighting goes, I think all martial arts are useful because the primary idea is teaching your self to respond to an attack. Practicing response and getting teaching yourself to have natural reflexes is the most important thing in my opinion.

Is the Shaolin martial art the best?

Are the Shaolin Martial artists really the best?, i know they won't show anybody but, They do show some of their training, Are they all they are cracked up to be? ----I'd like to see a Criminal on death row or something attack a shaolin fighting monk, and see how it goes....just incase they kill him. hah so yeah, like Would Kick boxing end up beating up a shaolin monk? or is it legit? what do you think?

Is the Shaolin martial art the best?
the only reason those guys are so uber is cause they train at least 5 hours a day probably even more you could do any form of martial art and that training would make you a killer boy
Reply:A criminal on death row would beat any martial artist whether he practiced Shaolin, Kickboxing or Jiujitsu simply because the criminal wouldn't fight fair and would more likely use a weapon like a gun to kill anyone who tries to stop them. And no, Shaolin Martial Arts is not the best, neither is any of the other Martial arts out there today, you need to stop thinking you'll become the best if you study a particular Martial Art style. You become the best because of your drive and dedication to perfect yourself. It's the person who makes the martial art he is practicing appear like it's the best, not the other way around. If the Kick boxer trains harder and is more motivated than the Shaolin monk you mention, then he will kick the monk's butt and the same is true vise versa.
Reply:Shaolin is one of the oldest martial arts still practiced in the world and it is the basis of almost every Asian martial art. It took over 200 years to perfect it and it has changed little since. One of the reasons it hasn't changed much is that it is still effective. I don't like to brand things as best or worst but If you're looking for an effective art Shaolin fits the bill.

I don't know where you heard that they don't show anyone their art but they have had many demonstrations around the world including practical displays against other arts and they stand up well. One of the classic examples is a very old video where a Shaolin monk faced a TKD master in an open ring. While the TKD master expended a lot of energy trying to get a single attack in the Shaolin monk spent very little energy defending and blocked almost every strike. Only at the very end did the monk attack at all and when he did it was effective. It's an old video so the quality is poor and it was friendly demo match but still you can see in it that the monk made contact many more times then the TKD master.

Shaolin can be learned in many places around the world. The monks have several outreach programs where you can learn their arts directly from them. Also some schools do teach true Shaolin Kung Fu, either their masters were taught at an outreach program or at the temple itself.

I don't think Shaolin is the best art, but it is just as valid still as it ever was and easily as good an art as any other. I would take (and do) Shaolin over kickboxing or TKD but find an art that you have access to and one that you are interested in. if you can train in Shaolin I'd go for it.
Reply:Shaolin is good, but I cannot say it is the best. Every martial art has its own beauty, strength, and weakness. The more kinds of martial arts you learn, the better you will be. Just choose ones that are suitable for you. But the best victory is victory without war and bloodshed. Beat them up before they step ahead, by your mind.
Reply:Its not the style that makes a great fighter, its their fighting spirit.
Reply:I don't think it would take much for any martial artist to defeat a criminal on death row. Just pummel him while he's chained up. :) The shaolin martial arts seem pretty good to me, though what they show the public is very colorful theatrics, there are real martial arts taught there, at least according to oral tradition.
Reply:any martial arts just as effective as any other. its is the artist that makes the differance
Reply:First of all, JJBeard9 knows something, so read his post. Second, shoalin represents not one style, but a group of Chinese martial arts originating from the Shaolin Temple. These styles tend to be more traditional. The true secret to the Shaolin Monks being the best fighters, is constant training and dedication. This is the actual meaning of the term Kung Fu. Shaolin Kung Fu tends to be faster than most martial arts but falls short on power. It is up to you to decide which art form works best for your body. I love Shaolin Kung Fu myself, but not everyone does so well with it. For example, If you are overweight, you might try learning a more grappling intensive style.
Reply:Well, in the past, one of the top Shaolin fighter lost to a kick boxer and to a boxer.

See how it goes? I think those criminals you're talking about would be carrying a gun.
Reply:There is no "best" art. It's the artist, not the art.
Reply:There is no one best style. If that was the case, we would all have to stop what we train in and go to that "best one". It all comes down to the individual.
Reply:I have found from many testimonials that kick boxing is not the greatest martial art (no offense). As for the legitimacy of Shaolin monks, they are very very deadly in combat. You could watch one of the many performances by shaolin monks and see their stuff.

I myself saw a circus from peking that was on tour in south america. The shaolin practitioners in here were able to jump over 15 feet through little rotating hoops. I am also part of a line of shaolin schoolls called Shaolin-do. I have sparred with some of the black belts and they are very good.

I also made the mistake of partnering up with a black sash (tai chi branch) during a seminar for learning Pa Kua. I found out the hard way that tai chi practitioners will hurt you just by touch. He would literally hurt/ knock back me from mild touches and punches.

My experience says that Shaolin monks are perfectly legit.
Reply:The best, I don't think one style is better than another. Its the person who studies the style that makes it there own, I have been in the Chinese martial arts, for about 29 years. And have tested my style with many other different styles. But the best I have ever met was a monk I met in Louisville KY, I am a good size guy. and had about 70lbs on the monk. And he made me look like I just started the arts. I don't think it was his style. I think it was the man. (amituofo)

Shaolin or Wushu first??

Ok, i'm very interested in both, and plan to study them both. But i was thinking Shaolin would be best to learn first, because it's not a gymnastic-like as Wushu. And wouldn't take as many fancy jumping/gymnast moves to do. I'd like to work my way up to all those fancy movements. Although i'd like to learn the performance aspect of it, i'm different from a lot of people who learn martial arts now a days, i actually want to learn martial arts for more strength, %26amp; self-defense. I want to be able to fight better. As close to Traditional teaching as possible. Not simply for health or something like that.

So does anyone think Wushu would be best to learn first?? Or is Shaolin probably the way to go first??

Thanks (=

Shaolin or Wushu first??
Wushu,why?

Because Shaolin takes a long time to master.Wushu has some of the basics. Its interesting too!!!
Reply:plus woman aren't allowed in shaolin temples... Report It

Reply:If you want self defense then learn San Soo kung fu.
Reply:Most of us are limited more by the schools available to us than we are by the style we choose to learn. Choose the best teacher/school first, and then worry about the style. A great teacher in their own style is better than a poor teacher who teaches the style of your choice.
Reply:Hey, Shoalin Kung Fu is an excellent Martial Art, however it takes years of dedicated training to get it to work effectively for combat and even then it is modified to be more practical. If you want to learn Shaolin Kung Fu that is quicker to learn and that is widey used by Law enforcement and Military try Wing Chun Kung Fu, although it is not very flashy looking so you might not really cover that aspect, though you could do what I do... train Wing Chun for the Martial Art and just do gymnastics on the side ;-)

Wing Chun was created by 5 Shaolin Grandmasters to raise an army quickly (around 5 years to master instead of 12, note that this is full time training not a couple of 1 hour classes per week) to overthrow the Manchurian invaders in china.

Other than that the previous guy had the right idea, try to find a reputeable teacher in your area first then worry about the style, though Wing Chun is pretty popular the world over so it is highly likely you will find a school near you... The quality of the teaching though can not be guranteed.
Reply:Actually, Shaolin has a lot of fancy jumps and kicks. They are just not as exaggerated as those in modern wushu routines. If you do Shaolin and gymnastics, then modern wushu will be a no brainer for you. Realistic self-defense doesn't require fancy stunts, so if you are not too keen on looking pretty while kicking butt, good Chinese martial arts alternatives to Shaolin are plentiful, like Xingyi, Bagua, Hunggar, Mantis, etc. Most importantly though, it's to find the good teacher that will help make you a good fighter and do the style justice.
Reply:shaolin first but at the same time you will find the kata,s in shaolin and the wepon,s form very intresting becuse as you advance you will find many of the same gymnastice move in shaolin as you would wushu but with more attention to tradition then w and in defence of self more to use wushu is a style of the martial art,s yes but it lack,s any strength or usefull perpouse in defence of one,s self
