What is the training Shaolin Monks go through?

The monks of Shaolin mountain go through about 10 hours of training every day from around the time they are 5 or 6 years old. The start the day with a run to the top of the mountain, followed by a crawl back down (hands and feet only). They then have breakfast. They then have about three hours of forms and basics, followed by specialised training for the rest of the day.





Specialised training include:


* The "thimble fill", where the monk is suspended upside down, and has to empty a large bucket into another suspended above him using only a small cup about the size of a thimble. If he spills, the bucket is refilled and they start over.


* Head pounding, where the monk is held and his head pounded into progressively harder surfaces for an hour or so. This is to strengthen the neck and harden the head.


* The bowl suspend, where the monk stands in a wide straddle. Saucers of water are then placed on his upper legs, hands, on top of his head and on his upper arms. He must remain in this position for upwards of an hour without spilling.





There are a bunch of other exercises these guys do that make one cringe just thinking about it. Unfortunately the image of them in the west is that of a novelty, but they are some of the best trained people in the world, and I find it sad that many don't recognise this.

probably not nearly as grueling as what jack la laine does in one day- and he is 90.





Not to **** on the stage performers who must be in good shape to do thier tricks and acrobatics, but la laine is just insanely in better shape.
Reply:If you are looking for something that you can do yourself. I trained with someone who did some training there. And the main exercise he got me to do was to stand like you are sitting in a chair, only there is no chair, and sit up straight.





It is really hard on the legs and the only way you can do it (he used to do it for 1 hour) is to use your chi. To use your chi you concentrate on the lower belly, and feel the tingling spread into the rest of the body.
