Does shaolin kungfu has its root in India. Is it related to Kalaripayattu?

Very interesting question.

Shaolin kung fu was created by Bodhidharma, a buddhist monk who was appointed abbot of the Shaolin monastery in 527 AD.

He found that the monks were to weak to sustain prolonged periods of meditation, so he created two set of exercises:

The Sinew Metamorphosis, an internal energy health system.

The Shaolin Eighteen Lohan Hands, a martial art system that is the base for Shaolin kung fu.

Also we know that previously Bodhidharma studied the teachings of Buddha in India and brought them to China (the life of Bodhidharma is well documented as he is the founder of Zen buddhism), it is possible that he learned combat systems and health techniques there.

(The site http://www.kalaripayattu.org/ affirms this saying that bodhidharma was a Kalaripayattu expert)

According to legend...The monk Da Mo (Boddhidarmha) came to China from India to study at the Buddhist temple there. While he was there he found that the monks were, in poor physical condition, as they did little by way of physical activity. After sitting in a cave meditating for, what according to the strory was nine years, decided that the monks needed to develop ohysically. Toward that end he taught them what has become known as the 18 Chi Gong, or bone washing marrow exercises. That he, as someone trained in the fighting styles of his homeland was an expert in. These techniques eventually evolved into the styles that have become Shaolin Kung Fu.

As for its relationship to Kalaripayattu, it isn't mentioned WHAT the name of Boddhidharma's fighting style was so i suppose it is possible.
