What is the difference between Shaolin Kung Fu and Shaolin Kempo Karate?

Kempo is, as I understand the term, a composite system. Shaolin Kempo is supposed to be a composite that its progenitors developed after taking their skills back to China to re-learn or enhance them based on the original. How true that is or isn't I don't know, but it does contain forms with the names of the five original Shaolin animals.

Shaolin kung fu developed at the Shaolin temple(s) in China. The first was in Hunan but its success and popularity led to other Shaolin temples starting and contributing to the art (for example, the temple in Wudan gets credit for Tai Chi in the Shaolin system). Shaolin kempo would probably argue it is descended from Shaolin Kung fu. Most karate systems make that claim, but Shaolin Kempo professes a closer connection.

As far as which is better, I quote Jackie Chan's character in The Legend of Drunken Master: "depends on who's fighting." My personal preference is for Shaolin kung fu because it's a larger, more diverse art so it's more interesting to learn.

Many of the Shaolin priests were retired soldiers and generals, thus, Ta Mo's teachings were enriched and refined by these martial art masters and it slowly developed in to a martial art of the hands also known as Shaolin Ch'uan [ Shaolin Fist ] or Shaolin Ch'uan Fa [ Way of the Shaolin Fist ].

Shaolin was not a poor temple by this time and was regularly attacked by peasant armies ( since individuals had no chance to penetrate Shaolin defence's and walls ). Often, to enrich it's knowledge, Shaolin would invite wandering healers, scholars and now also martial art masters into it's walls to learn from these by sharing knowledge and skills.

Shaolin became very apt at Kung Fu and in repelling the attacking bandits. Slowly but surly the Shaolin became renown for their martial arts prowess and fighting ability. It is to be noted that not all Shaolin Monks were warrior monks, often they chose to specialize in areas of expertise, much like university professors. Although at this time all practiced Kung Fu, not all were totally focused on the practical aspect of the art, only the Warrior Monks. It is also interesting to note that Shaolin preferred not to hurt their assailants as this would have ramifications for their spirituality in this life and the next!

A mere 30 years later, Shaolin was closed and forbidden, it took some 30 more years, around 600AD, before it was reopened.

The Shaolin Kempo Karate system was founded by Fred Villari, a student of Kajukenbo and Shorinji Kempo systems, as well as other martial arts. Fred Villari's system tends more towards the Kung-Fu element and utilizes the techniques of the 5 animal Chuan Fa to a large extent. Added to the Kempo system was White Tiger Chin Na techniques as well as various Aikijujitsu projections and immobilizations. Shaolin Kempo Karate is taught across the United States and Canada. Grandmaster Villari's organization is Villari's Self Defense Centers. There have been several splinter organizations.

Kempo is a unique martial art having been founded several centuries ago in the Chinese Shaolin temple, thus bringing with it a certain air of mystery. As a martial art, Kempo is referred to as a Do. The Do is referred to in Buddhist Zen scripts as a path towards enlightenment. Lao Tzu, a priest of Taoism said "Mastering others requires force; Mastering the self requires enlightenment.." This phrases sums of the full circle of what Kempo strives towards. Although on its surface Kempo can be seen as a unique form of self-defense, hidden beneath its physical exterior are levels where characteristic centralization of mind and body form. At this level, Kempo's practitioners move from a simple form of fighting to a higher level of ability and a higher level of enlightenment. Ying Kuchan, a Shaolin monk and master of Kempo after a lengthy period of meditation in a Zen rock garden spoke of Kempo saying "Kempo is the power of adaptability and yielding; the harmony of all things working together."
Reply:Shaolin Kempo Karate or SKK is a martial art style that combines Five Animal Kung Fu and Kajukenbo (and more directly through Karazenpo, a derivative of Kajukenbo). Founded by Fred Villari, it comprises four methods of fighting.....it's form can be traced to Shaolin Kung Fu(which comparises many styles that are taught by the Shaolin monks.
